Today, we are trying out the wonderful Radial HDI! Radial is quite well known for their DIs, and has been an industry standard for quite a few years now. We have used a few of their products before and loved them!
What Radial has done with the HDI, is taken a DI, and added some extra features, one of which is compression. For a bass player, for example, this is incredibly useful, because it means you can give a perfectly well-rounded sound to the engineer.

The Radial HDI contains a wonderful set of controls and options that allow you to get the best sound out of your bass or guitar. The Level control drives the inputs of the HDI with instant visual feedback from the responsive front panel meter, while the Color knob provides seamless blending between an ultra-clean tone and amp-style distortion and saturation. This allows you to add whatever amount of character and grit you desire. The Opto compressor helps to control the peaks of the input signal, and a high-pass filter helps to clear up any excessive low frequencies that would be added by the Color control.
There is a lot you can do with the HDI! To test out all the different capabilities of the HDI, we will be testing it out with a bass, an electric guitar, and an acoustic guitar. I think that this will be a great tool for bass players, but as a recording engineer, I want to test it out on everything to see exactly what it sounds like and what it is capable of!
