When I was doing research on this microphone, I found that it was often compared with a Neumann U67, which is perhaps one of the most famous rock microphones. If you can use this microphone as a more affordable version of a U67, that is an interesting claim to make!
As U67’s are most known for their use in rock recordings, I tested the Amethyst by doing a cover of Fire and Water by Free. I generally think of bluesy rock being recorded on a U67, so this seemed like the perfect song! I do not have the voice of Paul Rogers, of course, but I did like the way this sounded with my vocals and the other instruments we recorded. This mic really does add some sort of extra grit or pizazz, which I really enjoyed.
