In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson shows you his in-the-box vocal chain for mixing female pop vocals.
When mixing vocals, Marc does not go after super, super compressed vocals, but he does appreciate a vocal that sits really forward in the mix. Getting that forward mix without hyper-compression, though, is kind of tricky. Marc has found that by doing serial compression – multiple in one chain – it does the trick without leaving the vocal sounding hyper compressed! In between these compressors, Marc will do some EQ, some de-essing, and other edits to really bring the vocal forward in the mix and get it sounding exactly the way he wants.
