Dolby Atmos Beginners Masterclass – With Ali AMAC McGuire & Dylan Ely

Back in February 2023, we head out to Portia Street Studios where Ali AMAC McGuire and studio owner and producer, Dylan Ely gave a beginner’s masterclass to young producers on Dolby Atmos and Immersive Audio Mixing

What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. Dolby Atmos mixing involves creating a three-dimensional audio experience that allows sound to be placed and moved in a 3D space, including above and around the listener, to create a more immersive and realistic sound experience.

In traditional surround sound systems, sounds are placed in specific channels, such as front left, front right, center, rear left, and rear right. However, Dolby Atmos allows sound engineers to place and move sounds anywhere in the 3D space, including above and below the listener, by using a combination of speaker placement and advanced digital signal processing.

Dolby Atmos mixing requires specialized hardware and software to create and mix the audio, including a Dolby Atmos-enabled mixing console and a system for monitoring the sound in a 3D space. It is used in a variety of applications, including movie theaters, home theater systems, and music production.

In this hour-long masterclass, AMAC and Dylan take you through the basics of immersive audio setup and best practices for working with the technology.

We are excited to see the continuing support for Immersive Audio.
