Take Automation To The Next Level

Today, the boss-man Warren is back sharing his uses of automation to give dramatic yet straight forward lift and width to a chorus.

As we can hear, the intro guitars are panned central or mono.
Firstly, we’ll take the rhythms 20% to the left and then the leads 20% to the right.
As the chorus comes in, use automation to pan each guitar fully 100% Left and Right.  What you’ll notice is that because the guitars are no longer stacked, you may need to use volume automation to ensure they’re balanced in the mix.

For the Bass and Drums, grab an EQ and high pass at 100hz to get rid of the low end and then low pass around 6-7kHz. With the bass guitar we want to high pass around 150 Hz so we don’t clash with the kick drum. With the kick drum, use automation to boost around 2.5kHz with a wide Q.

All DAWs should be able to automate a “bypass all” effects and plugins and that is exactly what we will do.

By doing this, when the chorus hits, you’ll feel the dynamic range and width of the track hit massively.
