Hello Everybody,

Warren here and I’m pleased to bring you a new review video – with a giveaway!

I’m joined, once again, by Mark Ashfield and James from “Present Day Production” (PDP). You’ll be seeing a lot more of them in our videos, in fact (and in case you missed it), we’ve started a new series with them called “Patchbay Posse“. We launched our first episode yesterday so check that out here, if you haven’t already.

We’ll be releasing new episodes every 2 weeks, or so.

But I digress!

Today’s video is all about IK Multimedia’siLoud MTM MKII” – a pair of speakers I’m well familiar with (in previous iterations), and which a good many of my producer friends swear by.

If you desire to own a pair, after watching the video, you can pre-order them here!

As with any new product release, I’m always looking for what has been improved upon, what sets it apart from the competition, and what scenarios it works best for.

So, right out of the box, the first thing I notice is the back-panel buttons:

  • +2/-3 db for low-end & high-end – 60 Hz, 50Hz, 40Hz (defaulting to 80Hz)
  • Sensitivity control for +4/-10 db
  • Input volume control
  • A 1/4″/XLR input
  • “Pluggy Dongs”? Mark will elaborate in the video
  • USB connection (we fumble with how to connect this between the speakers – perhaps the manual would help!)

We then move on to reading the manual and discover that the included microphone, paired with IK Multimedia’s “X Monitor” software, helps you to calibrate your speakers.

Among other features, you’ll get a readout of pre and post-response curves, and over 20 emulations of popular industry-standard monitor speakers, giving you the ability to hear your mixes in different contexts – without having to physically playback your mixes in other environments.

X Monitor also allows for:

  • Full control of the speakers’ back-panel.
  • Firmware updates.
  • Diagnostics of the speakers.

Brilliant!

We then move on to the calibration process, which was surprisingly painless. A few button pushes on the back of each speaker, four corresponding mic placements, and done!

Following that, we listen to a couple of reference tracks to test out the calibration (lows, mids, and highs) toggling be preset modes to compare/contrast.

One last thing to point out is that, for the size, these compact speakers give off a great low-end presence. This isn’t something you see too often.

The overall consensus: these speakers offer a lot, for a very reasonable price!

Watch the video to see exactly why we came to this conclusion.

At any rate, we hope you enjoy our review, and I thank you, ever so much, for watching!

As a reminder, you can pre-order the iLoud MTM MKII speakers here.

And a special thanks to IK Multimedia for providing us (and one of you) with this great product; as well as to my friends Mark, and James for being a part of this!

And…until next time…have a marvellous time recording, mixing, producing, and mastering!
