Vocals are the most important element in a hit song. While many instruments are played by humans, no single instrument offers a greater human connection in a song than the vocal. This means our goal is to produce, record and mix great sounding vocal tracks that with will connect with our listeners.
However, it doesn’t stop there, even if the vocal sounds amazing from the first note, and is sung with beautiful timbre and near perfect intonation we still have to keep the interest of the listener. We don’t want the listener to get bored, so we must fight against repetition through creativity. One common way to keep the listeners interest and keep the vocal sounding fresh is to create subtle effects that appear between vocal phrases or even parts of the song like the first chorus and the second verse.
Ariel Chobaz is a master of these types of vocal effects. His use of the vocal stutter was all over many of the songs on the albums he recorded and mixed for Nicki Minaj. In the video below he demonstrates 2 different places to create great sounding vocal stutter effects in a song he produced for French artist Marie Monti.
