DRUM MIXING with FX Joe Carrell

In todays video we dive into Joe Carrell’s drum FX video from how he sets it up, what plugins he uses and most importantly why.

The goal of this video is not to sell plugins but rather learn different concepts using any kind of FX plugin you have available or want to use.

Part of Joe’s drum template is using 4 drum returns: a dry drum master, parallel compression, parallel distortion and fake room master that is fed from aux sends on the dry tracks so he has full control of what he wants to send to the fake room and how much of it he wants to send. For the fake room Joe prefers not using a digital reverb like a lexicon but rather room emulation plugins like the T-Racks Sunset Sound or UA Ocean Way Studio.

It’s worth noting Joe is not afraid to manipulate his FX further using separate compression or EQ plugins to get the sound he wants.

Separate from the fake room is 3 reverb aux’s, one short room, one longer room and the third is a more “weird” reverb/delay send each automatically loaded with multiple FX plugins so Joe can quickly switch between his options to first find which plugin is giving him the closest sound he wants then he can tweak it from there. At the end of these tracks is a channel strip to then eq ad compress as needed.

At the end of choosing his sounds comes blending the three reverb tracks to taste along with the Fake Room Master track to achieve the sound Joe wants for his track.
