Recording Drum Overheads with Matt Weiss

Recording Drum Overheads

When I was 19 I worked at a local music store, I sold guitars and recording equipment. I befriended one of the clients that came in who had a studio. I got a call one day saying: ‘I’m on tour and I have a high profile artist coming in to record, can you do it?’.

That client was Louise Goffin with Gail Ann Dorsey along with Dave Gilmour and Pink Floyd Engineer Andy Jackson!
The studio was small with a low ceiling and we have a limited selection of Mics. But Andy is world class and within a few minutes he had an amazing drum sound!

What was this sorcery? How did he do it?

Overheads are one of the most crucial parts of drum recording and allow you to capture a natural picture of the whole drum kit. In this tutorial Matt Weiss shows you how to fine-tune the width, depth and definition of your overheads by using two different miking techniques. I hope you enjoy it!

In-Depth Course: Recording Drums with Matt Weiss

Have you checked out Matt’s new course ‘Recording Drums yet?

It’s an excellent step-by-step guide that gives you all the tools and techniques you need to consistently achieve the drum sound you’ve been looking for.

My good friend and engineer Matt McQueen edited this course for us and applied the techniques he learnt right away.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I started recording about 5 years ago and have been running my own recording studio for 3 years. Drum recording has always been my favorite part of the process, but also one of the hardest parts to get right. After watching this course and applying Matt’s techniques I’ve improved my drum recordings more in the last 30 days than in the first 2-3 years of owning my business. The bands I’m working with are excited!”

What a testimonial! So if you haven’t yet, go check out the course now and take your drum recordings to the next level.

Thank you ever so much for being part of this community and have a marvellous weekend!
