Genelec: Exploring the Legacy and Innovation in Professional Audio Monitoring

Genelec has long been synonymous with precision, quality, and innovation in the world of professional audio monitoring. Founded in 1978 as a family-run business in the Finnish countryside, Genelec has become a cornerstone in studios worldwide, known especially for their iconic 1031 and 1032 monitors that have set industry standards. For me, it is even more personal. I have been using the 1030 series speakers throughout my entire professional career. They have been with me in every critical session and mix, a true reference I know and trust.

Recently, I had the privilege of visiting Finland to tour Genelec’s factory in Iisalmi. Travelling deep into the serene Finnish landscape and seeing where these legendary monitors are crafted was both inspiring and enlightening. It was incredible to witness the dedication and precision that goes into every speaker. From the earliest active monitor prototypes built in a humble basement to today’s cutting-edge designs, Genelec has stayed true to its philosophy of accuracy and neutrality.

The story of Genelec is rooted in necessity and passion. It began when Finland’s national public-broadcasting company YLE needed active monitors for their new radio house in Pasila, Helsinki. Juhani Borenius, an acoustician at YLE, asked Ilpo Martikainen and Topi Partanen if they could develop a solution. Within two weeks, the first prototype emerged. After two years of refinement, Genelec launched officially in 1978 with the S30 monitor. The company soon moved from Helsinki to Iisalmi, where its growth truly began.

The visit to the factory was an eye-opening experience. Welcomed warmly by the Genelec team, I was given an in-depth tour of every stage of production. From circuit boards being populated on precise pick-and-place machines to manual insertion, soldering, and rigorous quality testing, everything was executed with incredible attention to detail. Seeing the wave soldering process and how every single connection is inspected gave me a deeper appreciation of why Genelec monitors are so reliable.

Drivers, the heart of any monitor, are manufactured in-house. Genelec’s oval woofer designs maximise surface area and ensure powerful, controlled low-end response. These woofers are carefully paired with sophisticated coaxial drivers in higher-end models, which combine midrange and tweeter elements into a single point source. This design enhances coherence and imaging, vital for critical listening and decision-making in the studio.

Another highlight during my tour was the aluminium diecast cabinets. Transitioning from MDF to aluminium has allowed Genelec to create sleek, curved enclosures that reduce unwanted resonances and improve thermal management. Integrated electronics and efficient Class D amplifiers make for powerful yet compact monitors, suited for both large studios and smaller setups.

Throughout the day, the Genelec team could not have been more generous with their time and knowledge. They took us behind the scenes, through every department, and even into the acoustic chambers where speakers undergo advanced testing and calibration. Standing there, surrounded by the meticulous process of tuning each speaker to perfection, I felt a deep respect for how seriously Genelec takes consistency and neutrality.

Genelec’s attention to room acoustics is unparalleled. I saw how every speaker is tested in special acoustic chambers to ensure neutral on- and off-axis responses. Their GLM (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager) software takes this further, offering automatic room calibration to help mitigate imperfect environments. This is especially important today as more creators work from home or mobile setups.

While in Finland, we also visited the museum inside the facility which chronicles Genelec’s incredible journey. From Ilpo Martikainen’s original clogs (which he wore while running between his apartment and the basement in the early days) to the millionth speaker produced, the museum was filled with rich stories and innovative prototypes. Seeing these firsthand really brought home the idea that Genelec is more than a brand — it’s a family legacy.

The factory tour also introduced me to the Personal Reference Monitoring (PRM) system, which includes the 8550 headphones and 9320 controller. This innovative system uses 3D scans of the listener’s head to create a personalised calibration, ensuring a natural, immersive headphone experience. As someone who often switches between monitors and headphones, this solution felt like a perfect bridge.

For low-end extension, Genelec’s subwoofers integrate effortlessly with their monitors. Featuring long reflex ports and adaptive woofer systems, they provide deep, clean bass down to sub-20 Hz frequencies. This seamless integration ensures that mixing immersive formats or bass-heavy music is both accurate and satisfying. I also learned first-hand how subwoofer placement and phase control are critical, and how Genelec’s GLM makes this precise yet user-friendly.

Genelec’s product range has evolved considerably. From the early days of the S30 and the breakthrough 1030 series, they have expanded into models like the 8000 Series, featuring aluminium cabinets and Smart Active Monitoring (SAM) technology for automatic room calibration. Coaxial models “The Ones” (8331A, 8341A, 8351B, 8361A) and adaptive woofer systems like the W371A push boundaries in imaging and low-frequency performance. Their main monitor solutions now include flagships like the 8381A Adaptive Point Source Main Monitor.

Internationally, Genelec’s reach has expanded steadily. From initial exports to Italy and Nordic countries, the brand is now present in over 70 countries. Their dedication to maintaining 80% domestic added value while scaling globally speaks volumes about their commitment to Finnish craftsmanship and community.

One of the most touching moments was seeing how much passion still drives the company today. Speaking with Johanna and Maria Martikainen, Ilpo’s children, I could feel how much Genelec remains a family affair. They shared stories of growing up around the factory, attending trade shows, and watching their father push boundaries with a restless curiosity. The notebooks Ilpo left behind, filled with sketches and ideas — some that became today’s products — were moving reminders of his innovative spirit.

Seeing all of this first-hand confirmed why Genelec has been my trusted partner in the studio for decades. Their legacy of excellence, relentless innovation, and commitment to neutrality make them an essential choice for audio professionals. Touring the factory in Finland was not just informative, it deepened my connection with a brand that has shaped my career.

Whether you’re mixing music, film, or immersive audio, Genelec continues to lead the way. Their blend of tradition and cutting-edge technology ensures that every nuance, every subtlety, and every emotion in your mix is faithfully reproduced. I have trusted them for my entire professional life, and after visiting the factory and seeing the dedication of the team, that trust has only grown stronger.
