Getting a Track Ready for Mastering | FAQ Friday

mixing down a multitrack-1

We’re back with another episode of FAQ Friday!

As always we have a ton of marvellous questions this week!

Our featured question this week: “When mixing down a multitrack song recorded at 24-bit/ 96kHz, what is the best method to follow?”

This is a great question! The best answer to this is… A question, are you using an external mastering engineer?

If you are using an external mastering engineer, we learned a lot during our chat with Michael Romanowski a couple of months ago he said that he likes to receive the files at the highest bit rate and sample rate as possible.

If you missed our marvellous chats with Michael you can watch them here:

Maintain everything at 24-bit & 96kHz that way your mastering engineer who is surrounded by incredibly expensive hardware will be able save that down to whatever it needs to be. – that is the best method if you’re using an external Mastering Engineer.

If you’re mastering it yourself:

  1. Save it down to 24-bit/96kHz.
  2. Open up a 24-bit/96kHz session,
  3. Bring the files in
  4. Master it in this new separate session
  5. Then save the new session to 44.1kHz/16-bit.

Basically kept it at the highest possible resolution you can for the longest possible time. – That is the answer to the question.

We cover the following questions during this episode of FAQ Friday!

• Do you ever listen to tracks, completely think through a mix and then execute it knowing exactly how it will turn out or do you start working and let the mix evolve and see where it takes you?
• How do you deal with songs you’ve received for mixing that you don’t like or even can’t stand? Do you have methods for not bothering or simply refuse to mix?
• Do you ever purposefully limit yourself in the studio regardless of the stuff you have available? If you do is the music better worse, or just different?
• When mixing down a multitrack song recorded at 24-bit/ 96kHz, what is the best method to follow?
• If Warren was just starting out and had less than $500 to spend on the best microphone he could find what would he choose?
