Lovely people, I hope you’re doing marvellously well! I’m very honored and privileged to sit down with the wonderful Graham Coxon, lead guitarist of Blur and Thomas Gray of Gray Guitars. Thomas is the son of Nigel Gray, who produced the first few Police albums!
Graham and I had the pleasure of working with a lot of the same engineers and producers during my time in England, including Matt Butcher, who has been Blur’s Front Of House Mixer for almost 30 years and is arguable one of the best live sound engineers on the planet!
As a guitarist, ‘Modern Life is Rubbish‘ is one of my favourite albums ever. It embodies countless musical influences and combines them in a unique and wonderful way. Graham gives us many amazing insights into Blur’s production and songwriting process and tells us how they incorporated the personal tastes and styles of each band member to form the their signature sound.
You’ll learn various ways to spark your creativity when writing songs, and tips on how to push the boundaries and find your own unique voice with your music!
Graham and Thomas were also kind enough to give us a detailed walkthrough of their guitar setup, and show us how to achieve a wide variety of great guitar tones, from Jazz to heavy sounds, creating ambient textures and country/bluegrass. You’ll get the combined knowledge of not only one of the best guitarists in the world, but also a well versed custom guitar manufacturer, who has built guitars for legendary guitarists, like Tim Renwick and others!
