Is it Your Job to Educate Clients?

Today’s featured FAQ Friday question is:

What if my clients are not professional, and they’re always late sending you missing audio files every week. I start having my first new clients, but the level of experience using DAWs is a huge difference. Is this normal, or should I find new clients?

This is normal! In the music industry, sometime the people we work with are disorganized or run late, or whatever else, and it is just something you have to get used to.

There will be some people that are very professional, who arrive early and are set up and ready to go exactly when they are supposed to be. But there will also be people who are not as organized, and that is just reality. Creative people are not going to adhere to the normal 9-5 schedule. They may work all night and then oversleep and show up late.

What you can do in these situations is make sure that you are setting boundaries, and make sure that you remain professional. If you find that a client is consistently late for sessions or sending wrong files or not sending all the files, try charging by the hour. Tell them that you will start working at a certain time, and if they are late or do not have the right files, you can start charging your hourly rate from whenever you are able to start working on their stuff.

In the end, we are working for these artists, so it is our job to be professional, to be prepared, and not to tell the artists off. Set boundaries and keep yourself organized, and be prepared for things to be a little unorganized, because that is just how the music industry is!
