What should you expect from the Mentor/Apprentice Experience?
Every person who works for me has apprenticed with me. The ones that have stayed the course have all built careers in the music industry. The common denominator in all of their success has been not only their single minded drive and ambition but their ability to encourage and support the artists around them.
I recently got two students from the Recording Connection, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to demonstrate what the experience of being an apprentice is really like and also just as importantly what to expect from a mentor. It’s a two way street, the apprentice should be free to ask questions (at the appropriate moment) and the mentor should not only teach through example by running great sessions but also by taking the time to share their recording knowledge freely with the apprentices.
In this video I show Alex, a Cuban Piano Player who has just started with me, how to record an acoustic guitar. We don’t just talk techniques of recording, but also the basic techniques of encouraging the artist and making them feel comfortable in order to get great performances!
