Sam Smith – ‘Stay with Me’: Inside The Mix with Paul Tingen

Lovely people, I hope you’re doing marvellously well! I’m very honored and privileged to sit down with the wonderful Paul Tingen.  Paul is an accomplished writer with a monthly column in Sound on Sound as well as being a guitarist with a music degree from Goldsmiths College in London.  Paul is the author of an amazingly thorough 352 page book about Miles Davis titled “Miles Beyond”  His book covers the “electric” period of Miles’ career and contains facts and details that are not revealed anywhere else.  He took 2 and a half years to write this book, and spent nearly 16 hours daily writing it.

I recently had the pleasure of talking with Paul via Skype and we talk about everything from his being a musician, producing and recording music and how he got into journalism. Paul has monthly column in Sound on Sound magazine called “Inside Track: The Secrets Of Mix Engineers

In our Skype interview we talked about Sam Smith’s smashing hit “Stay with Me” and a mix breakdown for the song.  Paul has been kind enough to provide us with the screenshots for the mixing session of this massively successful song that was mixed by the incredible Steve Fitzmaurice.  If you’re unfamiliar with other work that Steve has done, not only has he won 2 Grammys with Sam Smith for “The Lonely Hour” and “Stay with Me”, but he also achieved grammy status for record of the year with Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose”, and best rock album with U2’s “All That You Can’t Leave Behind”  You can watch the video below and you can also download the screenshots of the mixing session!

I had an absolute blast talking with Paul and I hope that you enjoy the video and find the screenshots helpful!

Please leave a bunch of questions and comments for Paul below. I’m looking forward to getting an inside look at more mix breakdowns of A-Class engineers in the future!

Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,

Warren
