Kevin Antreassian – Producing and Mixing Mathcore and Metal at Backroom Studios

Kevin Antreassian is a seasoned producer with a passion for pushing sonic boundaries. Renowned for his work with bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Mastodon, Aerosmith, and  has crafted a unique career defined by a love for noise, edge, and distortion. His approach to recording is organic and unconventional, resulting in a sound that is both chaotic and beautifully raw.

Having started his studio complex of both recording studio and rehearsal spaces in 2007 Kevin has been growing his name both as producer musician and tech through the years. This includes Kevin starting from having very little gear and even a makeshift desk using a platform balancing on two chairs as the main desk, only SM57s, and a PA mixer working for pizza in return to now having his fully equipped space. One of the best highlights is the “console” which is really a large combination of 500 series mic press, EQ and compressors built into the desk, giving the ability to be able to pick and choose however you want as oppose to being stuck with the sound of one console. As Warren mentions, if he had to start now he would choose 500 series gear.

Kevin and Warren talk through their favorite bands King Crimson, Queen and Motorhead and the appreciation for the skill level and music these artists brought with them. This leads to what similarities these artists bring to Kevin’s work and the genre of Math Rock that he works win from how methodical each part is, each note choice having purpose and intention even though to the normal listener it may sound like nonsense. Talking music production leads to fun stories between Kevin and Warren of experiences and tips they’ve had through the years from the old gear they’ve had coming up to stories of how huge albums got their guitar sound using Antfarm and other techniques.
