Bob Horn phase alignment

Bob Horn is a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning mixing engineer. He’s mixed songs for some of the recording industry’s most notable artists including Usher, Timbaland, Michael Jackson, Akon, Macy Gray, Neyo, Lupe Fiasco, Brandy, and many others.  He attended Berklee in the 90’s and then moved to Nashville, TN in 1998 when he began his music career.  In 2001 Bob moved to L.A. and became a mix engineer, later in 2011 he and his long time friend Erik Reichers built the Echo Bar Recording Studios where he currently mixes for all of his clients.

Getting a kick drum sound to sit right in a mix is an issue that many mixers struggle with.  Many mixers blend more than one kick sound together to get the right amount of low end thump, mid range punch, and high end cut.  But when you start blending samples together phase cancellation is always going to be an obstacle you have to overcome.  Bob has a great trick fro getting mixing two kick drums together so that the result is a big punchy kick sound.

Watch this video below to learn how Bob aligns two kick drum sounds to maximize their potential in a mix.

Bob has a brand new mixing hip hop course.  You can see some of his best tricks for  mixing modern hip hop music like the one in the video above.  He goes through every instrument and every single plugin on his track.  You can get it right here.

Have a marvellous time recording and mixing.
