Over 30 years ago I was a pimply kid guitar player with a home made electric guitar and a Seymour Duncan 60 Watt Amp who wanted to be Jeff Beck! I worked part time in music store selling guitars and recording equipment, taught guitar to other kids and worked part time as a recording and live engineer. I did whatever I could to make enough money and stay working in music. One day local musicians the Jamieson Brothers came by the music store and asked if I could man a session at their studio, they were going on the road and Guy Chambers had called them asking to use the studio for his friend Louise Goffin. There were two sets of brothers that owned the studio, Singer guitarist Kevin, Drummer Lindsay Jamieson (he went on to play with Ben Folds), Bassist Nick Hannan and his brother, my old friend, Patrick ‘Patch’ Hannan, the Drummer of The Sundays.
I showed up at the Studio, ‘Studio Poisson’ outside of the Village of Crondall in Hampshire. The Studio was located on a farm in a Cottage, it had a Soundtracs console and a Tascam MSR24 1 inch Tape Machine. For me, this was the big time! Louise showed up with her musicians and Producer, the Producer was Andy Jackson, famous to me as Pink Floyd’s Engineer, next was Gail Ann Dorsey who went on to become David Bowie’s bass player. As you can only imagine this was a baptism of fire! A young kid, really a kid in a candy store with world class artist and musicians, a world class engineer and producer!
Andy brought with him a pair of U87’s, he put them on the overheads, an SM57 on the snare top and a D12 in front of the kick, yes, 4 mics and that was our drum sound and boy did it sound amazing! Everything about that session was incredible to me, I sat there and soaked it up, the interplay between the producer and the musicians, the sounds, everything about it inspired me!
Louise is not only one of most talented people you’ll meet, she is also the kindest and most respectful, she brings out the best in everyone. When I joined the band Star 69 in London, my friend Patch brought me in and the band’s singer Julie had made her demos with Louise Producing! When I moved to Los Angeles the drummer for my first album was Chad Fischer, his next door neighbour was, Louise!
Louise is an amazing musician and friend, and has had a variety of experiences in the music industry that we can all learn so much from. I hope you enjoy this video!
