Master Bus Processing Chains from 3 Mix Engineers

Mixing through plugins on your master bus is a widely debated topic. There are many approaches and methods but the best part is that there is no one way to go about it.

Some mixers will start by adding plugins to the master so that they hear the effects of their processing chain the entire time they mix. Others will add mix bus processing at the end using small moves to sweeten an already perfected mix.

The type and amount of processing applied by mixers also varies quite a bit. Some will approach it by only adding one compressor to “glue” the mix together and only apply heavy processing to the individual tracks or instrument busses. Others will use multiple plugins for compression, eq, saturation, clipping and limiting.

Again, there is no one way to approach the master bus. You should approach it whatever way is going to make the song the best that it can be. If you’re looking for some tips on how to approach the master bus on your next mix, watch the video below!
