Getting Creative With Drums

Let us ask you this, do you actually have access to a drum studio? Or even more….a drummer? Many of us do not! Drum emulation can be a fantastic solution to this, but for most of us it stops there: making realistic drums.

Matt Lange (an award winning electronic composer responsible for work in such films as Blade Runner 2049 and Ready Player One) walks us through his process from taking a realistic drum beat into entirely new territory.

A key component here is Matt’s use of compression and tempo/pitch change before doing anything else to the sample. Eventide’s omnipressor, set to an extreme position, brings out air, width, verb, and power. This is further dialed in with tons of ear candy and rearranging along the way.

Beyond any processing, it’s key to begin the process with a good foundation, in this case being GetGood Drums, founded by none other than Periphery founder and guitarist Misha Mansoor.
