The vocal track is most important element in modern pop, rock and country music. The lyrics contain the point and theme of the song. The singer’s voice is what connects the listener to the music.
It’s important to mix the vocal so that it is clear, doesn’t overshadow the other elements of the mix, and so that it engages the listener and connects them to the song.
In today’s video we have a super cut of 3 full vocal mixing tutorials from 3 different mixers showing you their best techniques. In the first clip Cameron Webb demonstrates his techniques for mixing vocals in a punk rock song. This tutorial is from Cameron’s course “Mixing Punk with Cameron Webb.” Some of Cameron’s many notable clients include Motorhead, Pennywise, NOFX and Silverstein.
The second clip features Erik Reichers working on a pop vocal track with a female vocalist. Erik has worked with artists like Snoop Dogg, Everclear and Lupe Fiasco. The song is “Nightfall” by the band Little Empire and features an amazing female vocalist. You can see the entire process of producing and mixing this song in the course “Mixing at Echo Bar studios.”
Finally, this video contains a tutorial from Grammy winner Phil Allen. Phil won a grammy for Adele’s “Someone Like You” in 2012. He’s my former assistant engineer and he’s very talented. Phil’s tutorial takes you through all his steps to mix a vocal entirely in the box. The vocal in this song was recorded with only a mic preamp and no fancy outboard compression or EQ. Phil mixes it to sound great and fit perfectly in the mix and he does it entirely in the box. This tutorial comes from the course “Mixing in the Box with Grammy Winner Phil Allen.”
