Welcome to a deep dive into the art and science of mixing, inspired by an unforgettable trip to Germany to visit the brilliant minds behind Elysia. This wasn’t just a studio session—it was a chance to meet the incredible people who design and build the gear we love, and who, crucially, are musicians, engineers, and gear nerds just like us. Knowing that every unit they create is born from real-world experience and genuine passion made this visit all the more inspiring.
Introduction to Hybrid Mixing at Elysia
Mixing is both an art and a craft. When done in a hybrid environment—combining analogue hardware with digital flexibility—it opens up a world of sonic possibilities. During our time at Elysia, Ruben and I collaborated on a rough mix of a song co-written with Kora, who brought in lyrics, melody, and arrangement ideas. This cooperative approach allowed us to harness the best of both worlds: the warmth and character of high-end analogue gear alongside the precision and convenience of digital plugins.
The people at Elysia deeply understand this balance because they live and breathe music themselves. Their designs are shaped not only by technical expertise but also by the hands-on needs of musicians and mixers. It was amazing to see this ethos reflected in every detail of the gear and the workflow.
Drum Processing: Achieving Punch and Clarity
Using the Envelope for Drum Dynamics
A highlight of our session was the drum sound. Having previously worked with Ruben and Moses in the south of France, I was eager to dive deeper into what Elysia’s equipment could do. The Envelope transient designer quickly became the star here. Unlike traditional transient shapers, the Envelope splits the frequency spectrum to let you separately sculpt the attack and sustain. This gave us remarkable control over the drum’s punch and body.
By tweaking the attack and sustain in specific frequency bands, Ruben shaped a tight, punchy, disco-style drum sound full of energy yet free from muddiness. This level of precision truly showcased the power of hybrid mixing.
Empressor and Character for Drum Colouration
Next, the Empressor compressor and Character saturation unit came into play. The Empressor, a mono compressor, excelled at adding aggressive yet musical control, while Character introduced harmonic excitement without overwhelming the low end. A particularly fascinating feature was the colour control on Character, which lets you preserve bass clarity while adding rich mids and highs.
Stereo Imaging and Filtering with X Filter
The X Filter, a four-band stereo EQ, rounded out the drum mix. Its passive design and unique high-frequency dip gave the sound a natural air and sheen. Ruben used this to sculpt space around the drums, removing boxy low mids and adding sparkle up top.
Vocal Processing: Enhancing Clarity and Presence
Vocals, recorded with a ribbon microphone, needed careful handling to preserve their natural grit while ensuring clarity. The Empressor again proved invaluable, taming dynamics without squashing the vocal’s personality. Combined with the X Filter, which reduced harshness and subtly boosted lows, the vocals remained detailed and balanced.
In the context of a dance-driven track, we kept the vocals slightly tucked back to let the rhythm shine. Thanks to the quality of the chain, they still translated beautifully on smaller speakers.
Master Bus Processing: Polishing the Final Mix
Alpha Compressor and Soft Clipper
On the master bus, the Alpha compressor worked its magic. Combining smooth compression with a soft clipper, it allowed us to push the loudness without harshness. Ruben showed how driving the input and using the clipper tamed peaks while retaining punch and transparency—perfect for meeting modern loudness targets while preserving the track’s feel.
EQ and Stereo Enhancement
Finally, we applied a subtle tilt EQ to brighten the high mids and clear up the low end. Using the Alpha’s mid-side processing, we enhanced the stereo width without losing mono compatibility. The result was a mix that felt spacious, dynamic, and emotionally engaging.
Mixing Workflow and Philosophy
Beyond the gear, what really stood out from this session—and from meeting the Elysia team—was their philosophy. These are real engineers and musicians who understand that mixing is about emotion, not just numbers on a meter. Their workflow is refreshingly focused:
- Hybrid Approach: Marrying analogue character with digital convenience.
- Minimal Inserts: Relying on powerful processors over endless plugins.
- Parallel Processing: Using creative routing for depth and movement.
- Focus on Groove: Letting the live performances breathe and drive the track.
- Balance Over Loudness: Ensuring clarity and punch without sacrificing musicality.

Conclusion
Our visit to Elysia was far more than a technical exploration. Meeting the people behind the gear, seeing their passion, and sharing our love of music and mixing made it deeply personal and inspiring. From the transient shaping of the Envelope to the harmonic colour of the Character, and from the precise vocal control with the Empressor to the transparent final polish of the Alpha, this session showcased the true potential of hybrid mixing.
Mixing at Elysia is not about overcomplicating things—it is about making deliberate, musical decisions with tools built by people who genuinely get it. If you love gear, music, and the art of sound, there’s nothing more rewarding than working with equipment designed by fellow musicians and engineers who are as enthusiastic as you are.
