The Secret To Mixing Low End

Today we have the incredibly talented Mixer, Producer and Engineer, Emiliano Caballero, with us sharing his trick to mixing low end.

This trick preserves and increases the headroom of the mix without thinning out the entire track and maintaining a solid low end.

When you get a lot of low end information, this is sometimes great, but can sometimes be detrimental to the headroom with how punchy the track is. When it comes to this you have to pick your battles and choose which “characters” you want to lead in the song.

For 808’s, you need to be aware of how much is eating your headroom and the headroom limitations. With this trick, you will be able to shave off some of the low end that is eating up your headroom, taking care of that extra voltage.

Every little half or quarter DB you can get rid of with this trick will help your mix be more punchy. Once you get rid of some of the DB, you can give that space away to the sub-bass, the bass guitar in the chorus, etc. and it always helps for the compressors to breathe more.
