In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson shows you his secret one-trick wonder to making mixes and kick punch!
What we’re looking to do is expand the transient without adding too much EQ that could make the kick slightly metallic, harsh, and rendered useless against the full mix.
This trick will allow you to add a punchy side of the mix while still getting the volume.
Using Spiff by Oeksound, we want to poke through and hone in on a particular area of the transient. The great thing about Spiff is that it adds its own colour to the tonality of the song without losing the body and transparency of the recorded instrument as it happen when just boosting the transient by using just an EQ.
You can use the “Delta” function to listen through just to that area.
Once we put Spiff back into the mix, the trick here is to put it in parallel so you’re able to just bring out the fine detail on the area we’ve honed in on. Marc is using it about 17-19% to ensure that transient punches through whilst keeping the bottom boominess sounding lush and full.
Such a simple tool can also apply over to vocals and guitars to create a full-bodied sound with a cutting attack.
