Music Licensing & Royalties | FAQ Friday

Earlier this week we did a LIVE Q&A with Jon Skinner, CEO/Founder of MusicGateway.com, answering your questions about music licensing. We got the chance to pick his brain, he was even able to answer some questions that I had as well! You can watch our Q&A here: Music Licensing Q&A with Jon Skinner.

One of the questions I get asked all the time is “How can I get my music into movies?” Well, Jon’s company, Music Gateway, basically does that.

One of the topics we covered during our Q&A was about the importance of building relationships. If you live in a big city, you can seek these people out, email them, take them out for coffee!

One of the things Jon was talking about was attending conferences. I’ve always been a little bit skeptical about these “licensing” conferences, however I have a couple of artists that I work with who have proven this to work! They’ve gone to these conferences, met up with music supervisors, shook their hands, got their email addresses, sent them music, followed through, and they built relationships.

If you’re in a more remote area or country, it’s not going to be as easy to attend these conferences or take music supervisors out for coffee! You do still need to get your music in front of these music supervisors! You can go to LinkedIn and look these people up and you’ll see hundreds of them. You can reach out to them, send them your music. You need to be proactive.

I go into more depth about music licensing in the video below! I also answer the following questions:
• How to I get paid when my music is played online or on the radio?
Is there somewhere I should be signing up?
• How do you split song ownership if there’s more than one writer?
•  Should I be copyrighting my music? At which point should I copyright it? How do I do this?
•  In the age of the internet, do I really need a record label to distribute my music?
• If I’m producing AND/OR engineering an album, does that mean I own a part of that music?
• Who makes sure you get paid? Is there a program that watches the internet and listens to every radio station?

I hope you enjoyed today’s FAQ Friday! I’ll see you next week!
