Helloooo Plappernauts!
Today I am very excited to announce the first episode in a new series for Produce Like a Pro called “Patchbay Posse”…
[cue the echo-y “Western” tremolo guitar, complete with tumbleweed]
…where my Pals over at “Present Day Production” (PDP) (https://www.presentdayproduction.com/):
- James Nugent, PDP Tech Wizard; and
- Mark Ashfield, Mastering Engineer
And I talk shop about all things “audio production”.
We delve into some tasty topics such as:
- The Audient “Oria”.
- The Lewitt “Ray” microphone.
- Logic and Pro Tools “pros and cons”.
- Universal Audio’s “Luna” (Digital Audio Workstation) DAW.
- Schnits and schniggles [i.e. “UK” banter].
And so much more…
One thing to note (for this episode anyway) is that it’s not sponsored so (as I mention in the video) we’re able to be blunt about our experiences with much of the equipment we discuss.
We even get into a (possibly controversial) little discussion about Mac vs. PC, and how Luna may have helped bridge the gap between the two camps (we didn’t forget about you Cubase/Reaper/Studio One users!).
We’ve all felt frustrations, with software cross-compatibility, when recording “in the box”.
Mark threw his computer out the window in 1999, due to an interface installation issue he was encountering with Windows 95 – true story! He later bought a Mac and he claims, “I just plugged it in and that was it!”
We’re not implying anything at all (I use PCs as well!) but, this is the type of honesty we get into.
Let’s also quickly call-out of a couple of anecdotal product references we discuss in the video, shall we?
Lewitt RAY – Microphone
This impressive mic, made by Lewitt, has several features that make it a good “all-purpose” mic for any studio but, two of the mic’s stand-outs are:
- The proximity-based muting functionality.
- A built-in “autofocus” feature (based on AURA technology) that makes the usual mic placement woes (which we all experience, on a daily basis) feel like a thing of the past.
Mark really likes it, and we even use it for the chat.
**no muscles were strained during the filming of this video due to frequent leaning in to emphasize a point (though I do it anyway)**
Read more about this mic on Lewitt’s blog.
Audient Oria – Immersive Audio Interface
Mark’s statement, calling the Oria “[one of] the product(s) of the year” may seem like hyperbole but there’s likely something to that. He adds that it, “changed our ATMOS world, completely…”
And indeed it seems to be a stiff competitor, in a world ever-growing with the need for ATMOS mixes. The Oria is the first of its kind, designed with the intent of recording with immersive audio, beginning at the interface/monitor stage.

At any rate, this conversation was great fun and we hope it’ll leave you wanting more – we’re planning to make it a regular thing – so please like, comment, and subscribe for more episodes like this one!

Many Thanks,
Warren
