Over the course of my career, I’ve been blessed to work with many incredible producers and engineers, such as Jack Douglas, David Foster, Rick Rubin, Michael Brauer, Mark Endert and many more. Now you may think:
Wow, that is so cool, you can learn and rip off all of their special recording and mixing techniques!
And yes, I have learned a great bunch of new techniques and strategies that I use to this day.
But what really made the biggest difference for my music is understanding how they THINK about music production:
What are the key elements of the song? How can we layer different parts, textures and effects to add tension and excitement that our listeners will connect to?
It’s their thought process and philosophy that makes these guys stand out from the rest. You can learn almost any technique on youtube or from books, but what will really take your skills to the next level is understanding the WHY behind the production and mixing techniques we use.
In this tutorial, I’m walking our Apprentice Alex from Recording Connection through a full-blown rock production and share the recording and mixing choices I’ve made. I’m also going into detail about the WHY behind every decision and share my philosophy behind it:
Layering multiple guitar parts to form a huge wall of sound, creating tension between sections by using different textures, vocal production, mixing, workflow and more. I hope you enjoy it!
