Recording Woodwinds & Band Live – Jazz Cover of Nine Inch Nails “Hurt”

Recording Woodwinds and Band Live

Today’s video features Matt Brownlie and Daren Burns at NRG Studios, in Studio A, where they will be tracking a double jazz quartet.

Studio A was custom designed by Studio Bauton Architecture. This studio features a 3o’ by 40′ live tracking room with cement walls and birch paneling, a 6,000 cubic foot control room with 12′ ceilings, 3 iso booths, a producers lounge (which can double as a fourth iso booth when needed), and a Yamaha C-7 concert grand piano.

In this session, Daren Burns will be tracking a double jazz quartet. This includes two drum sets, two basses, a guitar, piano, and two woodwind players. There will also be some Indian percussion coming in later on.

With the drum kits, there was no need to worry about isolation, so they were both put in the same room. The two kits will be playing off each other, so it is okay for them to bleed together a bit. The guitar went straight into an amp, which was in an iso room. Both basses were strictly DI and going straight into pro tools, so there was no need to worry about them having drums bleed into them. Each of the woodwind instruments – one bass clarinet and one flute – is in their own isolation booth.

Setting up the studio for this type of track was interesting since NRG Studios is typically set up more for rock bands!

We are also giving you the multitracks from this session!
