Tucked away on Brewery Road in Lower Holloway, just north of Holloway Road and the Nag’s Head commercial district, lies a London institution you might not know by name but almost certainly know by reputation: Sensible Music Studios. Officially part of the London Borough of Islington, it is ideally positioned, just a short walk from King’s Crossand right near Tileyard, one of the city’s key creative clusters. For decades, Sensible Music has quietly powered some of the biggest names in music, offering a home away from home for artists, producers, and touring crews.
For me, visiting Sensible Music felt like stepping back into my own past. Years ago in Los Angeles, I co-owned a studio business with two rooms, one with an API console and the other with a Neve, alongside gear rental, lockouts, and a thriving rehearsal space. We ran that business for twenty years. It was a multi-use facility at a time when that wasn’t the norm. Walking into Sensible Music, I immediately felt a familiar buzz. This is one of those rare places that understands how to keep things running smoothly for working musicians.
Founded in the early 1980s, Sensible Music began life in Notting Hill before relocating to its current Lower Hollowayhome in 1992. Over the years, it has grown organically into a fully integrated studio complex. Today it offers two world-class recording studios, long-term lockouts, backline rental, and tour production services, all under one roof. It is a music industry Swiss army knife.
Sensible Music Studios is co-owned by two multi-talented professionals: Shelby Logan Warne, a progressive rock musician as well as a seasoned recording, mixing, and mastering engineer, and Grace Hayhurst, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and creative media specialist.
Shelby’s work focuses on rock and pop production, with a particular love for progressive rock, metal, and synth-pop. As a progressive rock artist in her own right, she brings a deep understanding of musical dynamics and complexity to her productions. Her credits include collaborations with Placebo and Adam Anderson of Hurts, along with post-production and recording work for the BBC, Aardman Animations, Sky, Anvil Games, and more. She brings both technical finesse and a musical ear to every session, a rare and invaluable combination.
Grace grew up immersed in classical music, playing piano and French horn at a high level in orchestral settings before expanding into guitars, bass, and synthesisers. Her range spans orchestral scoring, heavy metal riffs, and everything in between. In addition to her musical talents, she is also a professional photographer and offers on-site media creation, an added bonus for artists looking to document their sessions or create compelling visual content while recording.
Studio A: The Heart of Sensible Music Studios
The main recording space at Sensible Music is Studio A, a beautifully designed suite made up of a spacious control room and two adjacent booths, totalling approximately 500 square feet. What sets this room apart is its seamless tie-line connection, 56 direct lines, to Studio 4, the 1,000-square-foot multimedia or live room, making it ideal for full-band recordings, string sections, or even full-blown orchestral sessions.
Studio A was redesigned by Chris Walls of Level Acoustic Designs and brought to life by Justin Spier of Studio Creations. At the centre of it all sits a SSL AWS948 Delta console, delivering the tactile power and workflow flexibility engineers dream of. The control room was purpose-built to house soffit-mounted PMC BB5 XBDs, which offer stunning clarity, power, and translation. It is a monitoring environment that simply never disappoints.
To the left, large sliding glass doors open into the main booth, an ideal space for drums, vocals, or anything that needs to breathe. Clever use of floating gobos allows engineers to alter the acoustic response by rotating between absorbent and reflective surfaces, making it a versatile and sonically flexible space.
A second booth, once Sensible Music’s tape room, now serves as a re-amp zone, vocal booth, or even a private writing or programming suite. It is that kind of flexibility that makes Studio A so well loved by both artists and producers.
Sensible Music also boasts a deep collection of vintage and modern outboard gear, a carefully curated microphone locker, and a wide-ranging backline inventory. From classic guitars and drum kits to synths, keys, percussion, and amps, it is all available, seven days a week.
A Legacy of Legendary Clients
As we walked through the building, I was struck by how smartly designed everything is, not just visually but sonically. This is a place that has hosted the likes of Noel Gallagher, Mark Ronson, and PJ Harvey, and it is easy to see why. The artist roster is astounding: The Rolling Stones, Blur, Suede, Grace Jones, Lady Gaga, U2, Ed Sheeran, and many more. And if you are wondering just how deep the legacy goes, from Amy Winehouse to Whitney Houston, some of the most iconic voices in music history have passed through these doors.
Sensible Music Studios operates by a simple but powerful mantra: world-class studios, world-class records, world-class equipment. With over 35 years of experience in the music industry, the team has worked with everyone from iconic chart-toppers to tomorrow’s breakout artists. Independent or major, established or just starting out, they provide a second-to-none service built around bringing out the very best in every performance.
What sets Sensible Music apart is not just the gear or the gold records, it is the atmosphere. This is a family-run studio, built on trust, relationships, and a deep love for music. That ethos permeates everything. There is no hard sell, no red tape, just real people helping artists do their best work.
They also run a full backline and tour production service, something few other studios offer. Need your drum kit tuned, your gear maintained, or your entire European tour prepped and packed? Sensible Music has you covered. That level of in-house support is a massive time saver for bands and crews alike.
It is rare to find a place that balances the warmth of a boutique studio with the firepower of a major facility, but Sensible Music does just that. Whether you are an up-and-coming indie band, a touring legend, or a producer looking for a reliable creative space in London, this is a place where you will feel not only respected but inspired.
So here is to Shelby, Grace, and the whole Sensible Music team. You have built something truly special. And if you are reading this from a cramped flat or a noisy rehearsal room, dreaming of a space where everything just works, you might want to give them a ring.
