‘Shout’ Tears For Fears – Neumann MT – 48 Review

Covering ‘Shout’ by Tears For Fears was a huge pleasure, this song is a masterpiece and I was blessed to work with amazing musicians and put the Neumann MT-48 through it’s paces!

“Shout” by Tears For Fears was recorded at Wessex Sound Studios in London, England. The song was released in 1985 as the second single from their album “Songs from the Big Chair.”

Wessex Sound Studios used a Solid State Logic SSL 4000-series console for the recording of “Shout” by Tears For Fears. We often think of classic records being recorded on Neve consoles and then mixed on SSL’s. The truth is that some of the greatest recordings from the ‘80s were both recorded and mixed on an SSL 4000.

We recorded our cover of this classic song, Shout at both Nick Sowden’s Studio La Barca Sound and BIMM in Brighton. It was mixed in-the-box at BIMM with Laila Riis assisting.

In this video we had Deco’s singer Max Kendall perform all the vocals, the drums were performed by Andy Sear, Nick Sowden played the Neumann Cups!, Steve Maggiora played all the keys and I played guitar, produced the track and mixed it with Laila and Nick Assisting.

Neumann’s MT-48 is like all things Neumann, uncompromising! With huge dynamic range, superior converters, preamps and headphone amplifiers, it sets new standards in sound quality. They gone out of their way to make it extremely option packed into a small table top unit with Internal DSP power allows for monitor mixes with sophisticated EQ and dynamics processing – all intuitively controlled via touchscreen.

The MT 48 was developed in close cooperation with a company we have a huge amount of respect for, the Swiss manufacturer Merging Technologies, whose high-precision AD converters offer a staggering dynamic range of 136 dB. This gives the MT 48 four times the resolution of comparable audio interfaces.

The MT 48 comes fully equipped for the reference-class personal studio: two extremely low-noise mic/line preamps with up to 78 dB gain, two line/instrument inputs, four monitor/line outputs and two superb headphone outputs, each with state-of-the-art AD/DA converters.

In true German/Swiss engineering style the MT 48’ offer exceptional connectivity, it may be expanded via ADAT / S/PDIF and AES67; and a MIDI interface is also integrated. Up to four separate monitor mixes can be controlled directly on the unit via touchscreen. On-board processing includes a fully parametric 4-band EQ and a 3-way dynamics processor (gate/compressor/limiter) per channel as well as a high-quality reverb.

RECORD WITH OR WITHOUT EFFECTS. OR BOTH!

The MT 48 is an audio interface and digital mixing desk in one. You can use its DSP processing for monitoring only, or you can print effects while recording. Or both at the same time! Thanks to the unique Dual Output Technology, wet and dry signals can be recorded simultaneously via separate driver channels. So, if necessary, you can fall back on an unprocessed backup.

It’s NOT cheap, however in this very compact package the MT-48 offers audio quality at the highest level, built-in DSP processing, comprehensive expandability, and convenient operation via touchscreen. Neumann have of course been the world leaders in microphones ever since their inception and they’ve recently expanded into speakers and headphones and the MT 48 is the missing link in the Neumann universe, connecting microphones, loudspeakers and headphones to create the perfect studio.
