Slate FG-2A: Recreating A Legendary Compressor

Slate FG-2A750

The FG-2A from Slate Digital is an emulation of the legendary LA-2A compressor!  They spent over a year modelling every peak, curve, and sonic nuance in order to create the most accurate emulation. This compressor is very famous, and has a truly iconic sound, and I am very excited to get to try out this new emulation.

What I am going to do here is I am going to put the FG-2A on all the individual elements of a mix and see if I can use it as my main compressor. I did get to play around with this a little bit a few days ago, and what I do like about it so far is I think it has a better release time. I find that with the LA-2A, in its natural state, I can’t get too aggressive with it, because it doesn’t release fast enough.

I also feel like this has two different extremes, which you will be able to see in the video below! The first is a kind of crushing effect, which we then paralleled and mixed back in so that we got some of the direct sound and some of this newly destroyed compression. It is a really unique sound! The other is what we did on the guitars, which is add just a little bit of sheen, and on the vocals, which was really remarkable and really brought it forward.
