VocAlign Ultra: Industry Leading Audio Alignment
VocAlign has been the go-to tool for tightening up out-of-time vocal performances. The industry standard VocALign Pro featured an advanced algorithm and plenty of user controls for the best results in less time.
The software is certainly a must-have plugin for working with stacked vocals, regardless of genre. It instantly brings performances together by matching the time and energy of a chosen ‘guide,’ so they sound clean, focused, and huge. Plus, if you’re working in post-production, VocAlign is an amazing tool for ADR, allowing dialogue to be replaced.
The newest VocAlign Ultra expands on the incredible foundation Pro provided with increased control and flexibility. However, the principles of using VocAlign Ultra remain the same. Select a ‘Guide’ track with the timing you like, then capture a ‘Dub’ track to be aligned to the guide. From there, let the plugin work its magic: an aligned Dub is created and printed to your DAW.

Right away you’ll notice the addition of an Output section. The Output area at the bottom shows the processed waveform overlaid with the Guide’s waveform outline for a visual timing accuracy reference. It adjusts in real-time to any changes made to the settings. This area also lets you audition the Guide and aligned Dub before render.
Next, you’ll see the addition of adjustable Match Timing and Match Pitch knobs. They very simply range from Loose to Tight depending on how much alignment you’re going for. Each can be toggled on/off depending on whether you want strictly time alignment, strictly pitch alignment, or both. Finally, there’s a Formant Shift module to adjust the Dub’s vocal formants higher or lower.
In the top righthand side of the scalable GUI, you’ll find a button which toggles between Basic and Advanced settings. Advanced provides further refinement of Basic, allowing you to choose different algorithms, pitch targets, alignment rule, transposition, and more.
VocAlign Ultra provides complete and custom control over the style of time and pitch alignment not found in previous versions. You can totally change the character of the Dub should you choose, by transposing its pitch, or keep it faithful to the Guide and simply tighten the overall performance up.
Try one of the many presets included as a starting point, or just start tweaking knobs. How you use VocAlign Ultra is up to you!
