Talking Drums with Blair Sinta at Sunset Sound

As many of you know I love to talk to engineers, producers and musicians.  I find it incredibly fascinating when I find someone that is all 3. Blair Sinta the embodiment of all of the above.  He’s has recorded and toured with Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks, Melissa Etheridge, Five For Fighting, and owns a home studio where he writes, records and produces songs for online remote sessions.

Blair has a great ear and loves to tinker with sounds and get creative in the studio.  Recently, we went to Sunset Sound and tracked a song where we compared a Focusrite Clarett 8 PreX  and Shure PGA Drum Kit 7 plus a pair of PGA 181‘s against the vintage microphones and the amazing console in Studio 3.

Not necessarily to say that one was better than the other, but rather to show that the drummer and the performance are what makes the part sound great!  Blair is an expert at tuning drums and finding the right combination of drums and cymbals to make the track sound it’s best.  Paired with his expert playing and musicianship and you have a winning combination.

In this video Blair and I discuss the drums he chose for the recording and he shows off his 3″ x 13″ Snare vintage Ludwig Vistalite concert toms that don’t have bottom heads.  He also shows us some secrets for creating interesting sounding cymbal stacks.  So please, take a moment and watch the interview and take a peak inside the mind a great musician that has a finely tuned ear for the drums.

Don’t miss our latest video at Sunset Sound, where we’ve put up a humble $1700 microphone setup up against all of the wonderful equipment Sunset has to offer, including over $100000 of microphones and an invaluable recording chain.

The results we’ve gotten from the inexpensive setup where fantastic and it proves that we CAN make amazing music on a budget. Please check out the video and listen for yourself!

Thank you ever so much for watching this video! Please leave a bunch of questions and comments for Blair below the video. He’ll be happy to answer your questions.

Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,

Warren
