Tips for Recording Rock Guitars with Cameron Webb

Cameron Webb is a master of recording rock music. He’s worked with many great bands, including NOFX, Pennywise and Motorhead to name a few.

I was at Cameron’s studio with Glenn Fricker and we were doing some recording for a new project. I picked up the guitar and started to play and sound of the guitar coming through the studio speakers was immense! It sounded like the guitar sound you expect to hear on a record. I began looking around to see what EQ and Compression Cameron was running, and there wasn’t any!

It was the sound of Cameron’s amp and cab. The tone was being capture by a Shure Sm57 and Sennheiser MD421 and going straight into Cameron’s console. The only EQ that was done to the guitar sound came from the front controls of the amp.

The amp of choice was a Bogner Uberschall and we used the matching cab. We put both microphones on separate faders and blended them on the way into Pro Tools.

Please enjoy this video to see Cameron’s tips for capturing a great rock guitar sound!

Thank you ever so much for watching. This week you can pick up both of our courses with Cameron Webb, alone with 4 others from Ulrich Wild, Ken Sluiter and Glenn Fricker in the The Ultimate Rock mixing bundle.  6 courses for $97!

Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,

Warren
