My first musical loves were all Production Masterpieces. Queen\u2019s \u2018A Night At The Opera\u2019, Supertramp\u2019s \u2018Breakfast in America\u2019, ELO\u2019s \u2018Out Of The Blue\u2019 and Steely Dan\u2019s \u2018Aja\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Our interview today is with Lenise Bent.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Lenise worked on two of my favourite albums, &#8216;Breakfast in America&#8217; and \u2018Aja&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">After Assisting at United Western Lenise became Michael Chapman\u2019s Engineer, recorded and mixed Blondie\u2019s masterpiece \u2018Autoamerican\u2019 containing \u2018Rapture\u2019 which is recognised, rightly so, as a revolutionary track where Debbie Harry rapped and name checked groundbreaking Hip-Hop pioneers Fab 5 Freddy and Grandmaster Flash. Bringing a whole genre to the attention of many more people worldwide.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Another single off of \u2018Autoamerican&#8217; the song \u2018The Tide Is High\u2019 is amazing melting pot of genres featuring Reggae Groove and a blending of Horns and Strings. A huge worldwide hit with amazing Production and a beautifully crafted mix! Lenise is as American\u2019s love to say a BADASS!\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Mentored by luminaries and being not only one of the first female engineers in Los Angeles, she is one of the best engineers ever!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In the interview, Lenise tells us about coming up as one of the first female recording engineers and\u00a0getting her feet wet with\u00a0recording in <span style=\"color: #206ab0;\"><a style=\"color: #206ab0;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.leonrussellrecords.com\/\">Leon Russell<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s \u00a0home studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">After finishing engineering school,\u00a0Lenise got a job\u00a0at <span style=\"color: #206ab0;\"><a style=\"color: #206ab0;\" href=\"http:\/\/villagestudios.com\/\">Village Studios<\/a><\/span>, where she worked with some if the greatest bands of the 70s and 80s: We talk the making of Supertramp&#8217;s two-time Grammy awarded album &#8221; Breakfast in America&#8221;, drum recording techniques and taking 12 DAYS! for finding\u00a0the perfect\u00a0drum sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We move on to talk about\u00a0the production and recording process of\u00a0Blondie&#8217;s &#8220;Autoamerican&#8221; album\u00a0and the hit single &#8220;The Tide Is High&#8221;, which was the most successful song in England in 1980.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Lenise tells us how she was diagnosed with belly cancer during the recording phase of Blondie&#8217;s album, but managing to stick through it because she wanted the credits so badly. Fortunately she was eventually able to beat her cancer!<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">At the end of this interview, we discuss the music production process back in the day, recording and automating\u00a0using tape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In the 1980s, there was no such thing as a recording engineer and a &#8220;mixer&#8221;. The recording engineer was working to achieve their vision for the record from the beginning, sculpting sounds and bringing it all together in the<a href=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/cleaning-up-a-muddy-mix\/\"> final mix<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">This process is very similar to most home studio owners today and there is one big takeaway:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Have a vision for the song, commit to the sounds you are looking for and gradually work towards your goals with every step of the production process: from practicing your parts and delivering the best possible performance, to capturing the sounds you want to hear as close as you can get them and\u00a0giving your tracks the final polish with your mix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">By working that way, you&#8217;ll\u00a0have more fun, be more efficient and turn out\u00a0better songs in the end!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We filmed this interview at DiaDan Studios in the <span style=\"color: #206ab0;\"><a style=\"color: #206ab0;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theevergreenstage.com\">Evergreen stage<\/a><\/span>, which was built by Barbra Streisand and has a an amazing\u00a0live room and console.
