Over the years, he&#8217;s worked with\u00a0other bands like Fishbone, Anthrax, The Offspring, Meat Puppets, Social Distortion, and Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few!\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-allmusic_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Dave&#8217;s career as a producer started in the late &#8217;80s with albums by Jane&#8217;s Addiction and Alice In Chains. In this role, Dave has taken a hands-off approach, deliberately not imparting his own taste in the music. Instead, he&#8217;s helped artists bring their vision to life with little interference, capturing them as they are. To this extent, he&#8217;s been quoted as preferring the term &#8220;engineer&#8221; over &#8220;producer&#8221;, even though he&#8217;s done both with <a href=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/3-tips-music-industry-success-grammy-nominated-mixer-ariel-chobaz\/\">tremendous success<\/a>! Guitarist Jerry Cantrell has said of the track,&#8221;That whole beat and grind of that is when we started to find ourselves; it helped Alice become what it was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was a pivotal song in their career which began to shape their sound, eventually helping define the grunge aesthetic of the early &#8217;90s. The late Layne Staley spoke of the song&#8217;s inspiration and meaning in a 1992 interview with\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I started writing about censorship. Around the same time, we went out for dinner with some Columbia Records people who were vegetarians. They told me how veal was made from calves raised in these small boxes, and that image stuck in my head. So I went home and wrote about government censorship and eating meat as seen through the eyes of a doomed calf.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cantrell has offered his account of the classic as well: &#8220;It&#8217;s basically about how government and media control the public&#8217;s perception of events in the world or whatever, and they build you into a box by feeding it to you in your home. Groups like\u00a0Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog,\u00a0Soundgarden,\u00a0Pearl Jam, and of course, Alice In Chains, gave the facility worldwide recognition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonbridgestudio.com\">It&#8217;s still open today<\/a>, with a fully maintained Neve 8048, SSL AWS900, extensive mic locker, and iconic status as the definitive alternative rock\/grunge studio of the &#8217;90s.<\/p>\n<h5>Commercial Recognition<\/h5>\n<p>When the record came out in August 1990 it peaked at #42 on the\u00a0<em>Billboard\u00a0<\/em>200, making it the first grunge release to break the top 50. In just over a year it became a much wider commercial success as the first album of the grunge movement to earn a gold certification in September 1991 (Nirvana&#8217;s <em>Nevermind\u00a0<\/em>would follow Alice In Chains&#8217;\u00a0<em>Facelift<\/em>, going gold in November &#8217;91).\u00a0It has since gone 2x platinum from the time of its release.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-first_gold_and_platinum_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The overall moodiness of the album is said to have been a direct reflection of the atmosphere and feel of Seattle in the late &#8217;80s and early &#8217;90s and was a genre-establishing release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Man in the Box&#8221; was a pioneering song for Alice In Chains and created a sound which would define an entire era.
