As we mentioned earlier, the dynamic SM57 with a budget interface can work wonders too!<\/p>\n<p>Remember, it\u2019s more about the performance than anything else. As long as your mic choice and placement is \u2018in the ballpark,\u2019 you should be just fine.<\/p>\n<h2>How to EQ Acoustic Guitar<\/h2>\n<p>Hopefully you were able to engineer the recording process to make your life mixing easier, or were at least able to get well recorded acoustic guitars from somebody else!<\/p>\n<p>The following are some general areas of interest on most acoustic guitars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80 Hz: Fullness (some would call this area &#8220;mud&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>240 Hz: Body<\/li>\n<li>1 \u2013 5 kHz: Presence<\/li>\n<li>5 \u2013 8 kHz: Crispness\/brightness<\/li>\n<li>10 kHz+: Finger noise and small string movements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Almost like a vocal, the frequencies around and below 100 Hz in an acoustic guitar aren&#8217;t entirely necessary. This area has a lot of sizzle that can compete with cymbals, so it wouldn&#8217;t be a bad idea to also\u00a0<strong>low-pass filter the high-end\u00a0<\/strong>to create space for all this frequency content. Remember, guitars are midrange instruments!<\/p>\n<h4>Tune the midrange for a fatter sound.<\/h4>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve mentioned, don\u2019t sweat the low end too much; that\u2019s where the bass guitar and\/or kick will shine. And don\u2019t sweat the high end (8+ kHz) either; there isn\u2019t much useful information up there in a full arrangement. Instead, focus on getting the guitar\u2019s dominant frequencies to sound their absolute best.<\/p>\n<p>To EQ acoustic guitar for fatness, sweep around with a big boost until you find the spot where it sounds thick but still bright enough to cut through the mix. Then back this boost down until it still cuts without being too muddy\/full-sounding.<\/p>\n<h4>Determine the acoustic guitar&#8217;s role in the arrangement.<\/h4>\n<p>This is the first decision to make to help you decide how to EQ acoustic guitar. Is this is a very simple singer-songwriter track with just guitars and vocals? Is the acoustic guitar the primary rhythm instrument in a 4-piece rock band? Are there keyboards, pads, or other rhythm instruments to compete with?<\/p>\n<p>For example, in a singer-songwriter track you should feature the acoustic guitar more prominently. It will also have to carry some of the low-end and top-end missing from instruments that aren&#8217;t part of the arrangement.
