Some of us are in bedrooms, our parent&#8217;s house, married with kids (not wanting to wake them up at 3am!), etc. It&#8217;s understandable that in certain cases mixing with headphones is a necessity.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that we have to remember is that they\u2019re very fatiguing when you have them strapped to your head. You\u2019ve <em>got to<\/em> watch the volume. And most of the time\u2014not all of the time\u2014material mixed entirely on headphones has a lack of depth. It&#8217;s usually very upfront, really loud, and there seems to be a spacial disconnect.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes these anomalies we get on headphone mixes work to our advantage. For the pop world, they&#8217;re actually pretty good! If you\u2019re mixing pop where you\u2019re trying to get everything really forward, really compressed, really loud, overly bright, and in-your-face\u2014headphones are fantastic for that because that\u2019s what they do really well! This coloration greatly effects the way we perceive frequencies, ultimately changing the way we mix.<\/p>\n<p>We might, for example, needlessly attenuate the low end on a pair of headphones whose frequency response has a bump in that area. Conversely, we might boost the high end to compensate for the exaggerated lows we\u2019re hearing.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t exclusive to headphones, as speaker monitors have the same things. But it&#8217;s a good idea to be aware of how your pair colors the sound.<\/p>\n<h5>Stereo Image<\/h5>\n<p>Stereo imaging is another major issue mixing with headphones presents. The stereo field sounds markedly wider on headphones than it does on a pair of studio monitors because the left and right channels are literally sitting on each side of our head. Additionally, center-panned mix elements sound like they\u2019re out in front of us on a pair of monitors, while they sound like they\u2019re in between our ears on headphones. These are all challenges that must be considered when establishing the stereo image on headphones.<\/p>\n<h5>Crossfeed<\/h5>\n<p>Finally, there\u2019s an aural phenomenon referred to as \u201ccrossfeed.\u201d When you\u2019re listening to playback on a pair of monitors, the left ear perceives the left speaker and the right ear perceives the right speaker. A split second later, each ear hears the opposite speaker at a slightly lower volume. Our brain processes all of this in microseconds without any consideration on our part because it\u2019s the natural way our ears have evolved.<\/p>\n<p>However, when we\u2019re mixing with headphones, crossfeed doesn\u2019t exist. The left ear hears the left channel and the right ear hears the right channel, with no natural blending of the two. Our brain notices material is missing, and we have a tendency to dislike what we hear. A really, really great pair of headphones can be pricey too, but even the best headphones available will likely still be cheaper than the best studio monitors available.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/best-studio-headphones\/\">plenty of fantastic, affordable options<\/a> to explore when shopping for headphones. The industry standard AKG K240s can be had for as little as $69, while the equally renowned Sony MDR 7506s are available for right around $100. Even the most basic entry-level studio monitors will run at least 3x that price and won\u2019t be nearly as suitable for serious mixing as a decent pair of cans.<\/p>\n<p>When cost is a factor (when is it not??), setting up your project studio with a good pair of headphones can be a very viable option.<\/p>\n<h5>Work Silently at Any and All Hours<\/h5>\n<p>This is probably the most obvious advantage that headphones have over studio monitors. When we\u2019re working out of our bedrooms or home studios, mixing at 85 dB SPL on a pair of monitors at 3:00 am is a luxury that simply isn\u2019t feasible. In an ideal world we\u2019d all have a nicely treated project studio with minimal sound leakage, but that also isn\u2019t realistic for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s loud neighbors distracting us or\u00a0<em>we\u2019re\u00a0<\/em>the loud ones in the situation, working on headphones is a quick and painless solution to any noise issues.<\/p>\n<h5>Privacy<\/h5>\n<p>To piggyback off of the ability to work silently, from an alternate perspective, mixing with headphones provides privacy. Try doing\u00a0<em>that\u00a0<\/em>with studio monitors. Don\u2019t get me wrong\u2013nothing truly replicates or replaces the traditional studio environment, but it\u2019s a fact that working anytime, anywhere has never been more viable.<\/p>\n<p>If you anticipate any sort of travel or simply favor the idea of being able to write or mix anytime, any place, you should definitely consider investing in a quality pair of headphones from the jump.<\/p>\n<h5>Detailed Listening<\/h5>\n<p>In terms of sound quality, most professionals will probably tell you that studio monitors beat headphones in just about every way. This isn\u2019t necessarily untrue, but headphones do provide the advantage or listening in much greater detail. What I mean by this is that, because they\u2019re literally sandwiched against our ears, we have the increased physical ability to focus on the finer nuances of a mix.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t that quality studio monitors <em>lack<\/em>\u00a0detail, but that the physical proximity of headphone drivers to our ears is a much different sensation than listening to monitors up to several feet away.
