In Barry Walsh\u2019s review for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slant <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magazine, he compared the ambitious double-sided album to another eclectic and lengthy pop endeavor &#8211; the Beatles\u2019 \u201cWhite Album\u201d &#8211; and concluded<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cCure gives the listener the kind of roller-coaster rush that only great pop can provide\u2014they take you all the way through the amusement park, plying you with the sweetest cotton candy, until you wind up giddy and disoriented in the hall of mirrors.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within this thrilling journey, the third single to be released from the album, \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d gave the band their first top 40 single and first real American hit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d was their biggest single of their career in the mid-eighties, it was not Smith\u2019s first foray into writing a catchy pop song.\u00a0 His 1983 UK hit \u201cThe Lovecats\u201d hit number\u00a0 seven in the UK but Smith disparaged the track saying \u201c\u2018The Lovecats\u2019 is far from being my favourite song: composed drunk, video filmed drunk, promotion made drunk. It was a joke.&#8221; However, with \u201cJust Like Heaven,\u201d Smith says \u201cI knew as soon as I\u2019d written it that it was a good pop song.\u201d In fact, in 2003 he reflected even more positively upon the track calling it, \u201cthe best pop song The Cure has ever done&#8230; all the sounds meshed, it was one take, and it was perfect.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47134\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47134\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47134 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/the-cure3.jpg\" alt=\"THE CURE - 1987\" width=\"600\" height=\"368\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/the-cure3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/the-cure3-385x236.jpg 385w, https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/the-cure3-20x12.jpg 20w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Stills Press Agency \/ Rex Features<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d came out of a dedicated effort of songwriting enacted by Smith that year:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn 1987, my wife Mary and I lived in a small two-bedroomed flat in Maida Vale in North London. The other room was my music room. Just about the only discipline I had in my life was self-imposed. I set myself a regime of writing 15 days a month, otherwise I\u2019d have just got up in the mid-afternoon and watched TV until the pubs opened, then gone out drinking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his regimented practice, Smith found himself composing a catchy melody alongside an accessible and yet slightly surprising chord progression.\u00a0 When The Cure entered the studio in the South of France later that year, they picked up the tempo from the frontman\u2019s personal demo. Smith told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blender <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2003: \u201cMy demo was slower, but I loved the way Boris did it, and he introduced a particularly nice drum fill as well, which is what gave me the idea of introducing the instruments one by one so the track builds up before the vocal comes in.\u201d From there, the band had the start of an ear-catching track, but it was still instrumental. However, even without Smith\u2019s powerful vocals, the track was entrancing. When the band was asked to provide a theme song for the french TV show, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les Enfants Du Rock, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they provided the instrumental demo to \u201cJust Like Heaven,\u201d a prescient choice which would get the hook into European audience\u2019s conscientious before the album would even be released.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was in Miraval studios that the song\u2019s lyrics came together. After a 94-second introduction layering in the individual instrumental tracks, Smith\u2019s captivating descent on the words \u201cshow me, show me, show me\u2026\u201d emerges as the crowning stroke. The opening line cleverly balances on the edge between childish innocence and a more mature skill. Smith told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blender <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that he had used to learn magic tricks as a child and would show them off to his friend: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one level, that\u2019s what \u2018Show me how you do that trick\u2019 is about, but on another it\u2019s about a seduction trick, from much later in my life.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inspiration for the song was his relationship with his now wife, Mary Poole., whom he had met when they were 14 at St. Wilfrid&#8217;s Comprehensive School in Crawley, England (the couple is still together today). Poole even makes an appearance in the song\u2019s music video as Smith explained in 2003: \u201cMary dances with me in the video because she was the girl, so it had to be her.\u201d Smith\u2019s personal storytelling in \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d not only brought the band significant commercial success with both the single and the album, but it also opened the door for an even bigger hit with \u201cLovesong\u201d (a wedding present he wrote for Pool) in 1989.\u00a0 \u201cLovesong\u201d catapulted off of the enormous success of \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d reaching the number-two position on the Billboard Hot 100.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps one of the most brilliant aspects of the song is the fusion of Smith\u2019s lyrics of uninhibited passion within a restrained sonic space. The repetitive strumming of Smith\u2019s rhythm guitar underlies the simple, yet captivating, descent of the lead guitar. The song\u2019s formal structure is deceptive in its irregularity. The constant pull of the rhythm guitar, decorated with the bright melodies of the<a href=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/midi-keyboard-101-ultimate-beginners-guide\/\"> keyboard<\/a> or solo guitar, mask the fact that the song lacks a real chorus. Instead, audiences must rely on familiar lyric and melodic gestures ending each verse to reinforce a sense of return throughout the song. Even the song\u2019s title lyrics \u201cjust like heaven\u201d are unusual in that they appear only once, immediately before the song\u2019s abrupt end. In 2019, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d at the ceremony. Reflecting on the Cure\u2019s influence and the lasting influence of \u201cJust Like Heaven,\u201d Ben Folds declares: \u201ceverything about it\u2014the songwriting, the music\u2014is state of the art. It\u2019s as good as it gets. Anytime I hear it on the radio or a mix tape, I jump around like a freak.\u201d While the song may not be the band\u2019s best selling track, it remains one of their most important.
