She explained the contrast to <i>Goldmine <\/i>in 2012 saying: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">You go from the little bubble of your dreams, of musical aspiration, and all of this excitement and energy, and creating your sound and finding your communal voice as a band. Suddenly, you get signed and enter the business side of it. There are teams of people in suits, mostly men, and they are staring at you and sizing you up and trying to figure out what to do with you and how to sell you. You realize that your little bubble of creativity is no longer a little bubble. You&#8217;re out in the world, subject to a list of people&#8217;s opinions that you never thought you had to consider. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">And in spite of that pressure, Hoffs has maintained an infectious energy for music making and collaboration throughout her rich and diverse musical career. During her time in college, Hoffs\u2019 studies in the arts were complimented by the late seventies music scene that surrounded her. From Talking Heads, The Velvet Underground and Patti Smith, to the last Sex Pistols performance at San Francisco\u2019s Wonderland in 1978, Hoffs\u2019 musical ear developed alongside her art studies. Hoffs reflects: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI wanted to be an artist and I didn\u2019t have a lot of boundaries around that. I studied dance and theatre and I ended up graduating with a degree in art&#8230;I painted, I made sculptures, I did photography\u2026..and I made a band\u2026 that band was just another thing that I <i>made<\/i>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">While The Unconscious parted ways after graduation, both Hoffs (in The Bangles) and Roback (in Rain Parade) became active participants in the Paisley Underground scene of their hometown of Los Angeles, bringing that \u201cart band\u201d college experience with them: \u201cThe goal wasn\u2019t to play a stadium, the goal was to get a gig at a club, you know, and be like the Velvet Underground at Andy Warhol\u2019s factory and just be part of a happening.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Hoffs and Roback had been childhood friends (and maintained that friendship until his recent passing in February 2020), but after a relationship that was both musical and romantic in college, Hoffs was ready to find a band without that added tension. Hoffs met Bangles bandmate<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s Vicki and Debbi Peterson through an ad she had placed in <i>The Recycler<\/i>. From their first meeting playing in Hoffs\u2019 garage, the band was formed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The Bangles spent their first years performing under the name \u201cThe Bangs\u201d until learning of a \u201cboy band\u201d in New Jersey who claimed ownership of the name. The solution of adding the \u201c-les\u201d to the name appealed to the band because of their shared love of the Beatles. A <i>Rolling Stone <\/i>magazine piece from 1984, noted the shared influence powerful, stating: \u201cMusically, at least, the Bangles have absorbed much of what was good about the Fab Four. The Bangles&#8217; stunning debut album, <i>All Over the Place<\/i>, is a testament to the enduring value of the simple, straightforward rock &amp; roll suffused with jangly guitars and Everly<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Brothers harmonies that the Beatles popularized two decades ago.\u201d But the interview\u2019s provocative <\/span><span class=\"s2\">title &#8211; \u201cThe Bangles: A Female Fab Four?\u201d &#8211; hints at an ongoing issue that Hoffs and her bandmates have faced throughout their career&#8230;that of their gender.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47389 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Approved-Susanna-Hoffs-photographer-Rebecca-Wilson-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"758\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Approved-Susanna-Hoffs-photographer-Rebecca-Wilson-1.jpg 536w, https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Approved-Susanna-Hoffs-photographer-Rebecca-Wilson-1-429x606.jpg 429w, https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Approved-Susanna-Hoffs-photographer-Rebecca-Wilson-1-385x544.jpg 385w, https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Approved-Susanna-Hoffs-photographer-Rebecca-Wilson-1-20x28.jpg 20w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">While the decision to form an all-female band was intentional, the stereotypes that accompanied that choice seemed<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> unavoidable.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Constant comparisons to the Go-Gos, while not completely unwarranted (Hoffs has admitted their influence), dominated critical appraisals of the band, treating both bands almost as novelties rather than acknowledging their individual and autonomous contributions to the eighties musical soundscape.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hoffs reflects: \u201cThere was definitely a funny fixation on&#8230;our gender\u2026.and if there\u2019s two girl bands, \u2018let\u2019s make it a competition\u2019 instead of \u2018where are all the girls?\u2019&#8230;\u2019where are all the other women?\u2019 I mean, we know they\u2019re out there!\u201d\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For Hoffs, the previous generations of female musicians had paved the way for her own development. In turn, as both a performer and a songwriter, Hoffs\u2019 voice has influenced new generations of aspiring female musicians. \u201cEternal Flame,\u201d which she wrote alongside Bill Steinberg and Tom Kelly, gave the Bangles an international number 1 hit, and has since become a favorite song for artists (of all genders) to cover.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She has put out three solo albums of original material, including the critically acclaimed <i>Someday <\/i>(2012), which American Songwriter gave 4.5 out of 5 stars and concluded that it was<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">easily and undeniably Hoffs\u2019 most definitive musical statement to date.\u201d Still, her role as an inspiration for girls ready to rock can still seem surreal. At the release of her last album, Hoffs told <i>Goldmine: \u201c<\/i>I am very touched and flattered when people say that The Bangles, or I, have been an influence for them. I&#8217;m always surprised, because I don&#8217;t think of myself that way. It is so moving to me that I could influence somebody to do something positive or to make music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">What\u2019s next for this vivacious musician? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Hoffs is currently finishing up a new album, and revisiting her past, with the rediscovery of an unreleased album from 1999 that includes collaborations with an exciting line-up of musicians including Dan Schwartz, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Bottrell\">Bill Bottrell<\/a>, Dillon O&#8217;Brien, and Charlotte Caffey.
