His recording credits include: Joan Armatrading, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, Brian Eno, George Harrison, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Fairport Convention, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, Richard &amp; Linda Thompson, The Chills and XTC, to name just a few. Dave was a member of Fairport Convention for many years and he has worked with legendary producers and engineers including Glyn Johns, Joe Boyd, Geoff Emerick, and John Wood. Dave and his wife now live in the US, where he continues to record and tour.<\/p>\n<p>Best known for his work with\u00a0Fairport Convention, Mattacks has also worked both as a\u00a0session musician\u00a0and as a performance artist. Apart from playing the drums, he is also a versed keyboard player and occasionally played the bass guitar on studio recordings.<\/p>\n<p>He began as a trainee piano-tuner before taking up the drums. He played with several\u00a0jazz\u00a0bands\u00a0before joining the\u00a0British folk rock\u00a0band\u00a0Fairport Convention\u00a0in August 1969, with whom he worked on and off until 1997.\u00a0In 1998, he moved to\u00a0Marblehead, Massachusetts, United States, where he is a sought-after studio musician, record producer, and member of the band Super Genius, while still touring regularly with various acts in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>He replaced\u00a0Martin Lamble, who had died on 12 May 1969 in a\u00a0road accident\u00a0on the\u00a0M1 motorway, as the\u00a0drummer\u00a0for\u00a0Fairport Convention. Mattacks left Fairport Convention in early 1972 to join\u00a0The Albion Country Band. Meanwhile, he had also contributed to numerous studio recordings such as the\u00a0Morris Onproject,\u00a0Nick Drake&#8217;s\u00a0Bryter Layter,\u00a0Steve Ashley&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Stroll On<\/em>&#8221; sessions,\u00a0Steeleye Span&#8217;s debut album\u00a0<em>Hark! The Village Wait<\/em>,\u00a0John Martyn&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Solid Air\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Harvey Andrews&#8217; album\u00a0<em>Writer of Songs<\/em>. He returned to Fairport Convention in order to help complete the 1973 album\u00a0<em>Rosie\u00a0<\/em>with a revamped line up of the band.<\/p>\n<p>Mattacks also played on\u00a0<em>Nine\u00a0<\/em>(1974) but left halfway through the making of the follow-up\u00a0<em>Rising for the Moon<\/em>, following an altercation with engineer\u00a0Glyn Johns\u00a0Some of Mattacks&#8217; most notable participation in studio recordings in the late 1970s are the work on\u00a0art rock\u00a0studio albums by\u00a0Brian Eno\u00a0(<em>Before and After Science<\/em>) and\u00a0801&#8217;s\u00a0Listen Now, as well as several\u00a0Ashley Hutchings-related folk rock projects (<em>The Compleat Dancing Master,\u00a0Son of Morris On\u00a0<\/em>etc.). He also established himself as a touring drummer for\u00a0Richard Thompson, playing on several of Thompson&#8217;s studio albums.<\/p>\n<p>When Fairport Convention re-formed in 1985 after a six-year absence, Mattacks was recruited as drummer. He had already been playing with them again during annual reunions at the fledgling\u00a0Cropredy Festival. Mattacks remained with Fairport until 1997.
