He had the opportunity to study a handful of different instruments, including clarinet, piano, drums, guitar, and voice. Out of all these, Matt really found an interest in the Roland Groovebox MC-303 \u2014 a classic sequencer \u2014 which his step-dad bought him one year as a birthday present.\u2028\u2028 This was in part the beginning of his affinity for pop,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/producelikeapro.com\/blog\/simple-tips-for-mixing-hip-hop\/\">hip-hop<\/a>, and electronic-based music.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mixing with Emotion and Finding Intention.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many videos that discuss how to start a mix. They vary from Top-Down mixing where you start with the master and only then start working on the smaller parts, starting from the vocals and building everything around and starting from the low end and rhythm section and putting everything in to place on top of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if there was another way?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt Weiss <\/span><b>starts from the part that gives the most inspiration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the most emotional tone and intention behind the track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could be an 808 or a vocal hook but<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YGlpQvTLa2I\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Matt starts with the sample that gives a murderous, ominous feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sample gives the idea for the overall record -it&#8217;s creepy, grit, dusty and there is mystery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How you interpret that, is up to you as a producer<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listening to the sample without any plugins it may sound rather dull and flat. Though as we feel that this is the main source of emotion in the track, we can work with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTT compression &#8211; aggressive. Brings out the grit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waves&#8217; MV2 is used to compress the strings tone to more them a little more obvious<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low compensation EQ after the elements. Take out the low end and sub and brighten it further<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the nature of the record, grittiness and harshness is needed and is our friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the tone is set for the sample, then scope the rest around it<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On vocals, Matt treats them with the following<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring in <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/7mO4Yy\">MetaTune by Slate Digital<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/QOzKAP\">SPACE reverb<\/a> gives it the 8mm film grain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/a1YKjW\">RC-20<\/a> Retro Colour to add noise, wobble, and distortion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/AokKnj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overloud Comp76 FET<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/VyR4AA\">FabFilter Saturn2<\/a> to make the vocal feel fuller<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/GxVzV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FabFilter ProDS<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The backing vocals also have a grittiness to them with noise within the Reverb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The desert-like grit in the reverb really emphasizes the middle-eastern\/African feel from within the sample\u2019s progression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we came at this record from a vocal-first point of voice, we\u2019d probably clean up the vocal to make it sound \u201cgood\u201d when really what we have done is the opposite.
