This iconic space has played host to some of the most important recordings in modern music history. Albums like Herbie Hancock\u2019s\u00a0<em data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"480\">Head Hunters<\/em>\u00a0and Crosby, Stills, Nash &amp; Young\u2019s\u00a0<em data-start=\"516\" data-end=\"525\">D\u00e9j\u00e0 Vu<\/em>\u00a0were born here. Walking through its hallways, you can almost hear the echoes of those sessions\u2014moments of sonic exploration and innovation that continue to inspire new generations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"979\">On this particular visit, I had the pleasure of working with house engineer Will Chason and the band Forest Day as they brought their track\u00a0<em data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"870\">Sweat Shop Cathedral<\/em>\u00a0to life. A collective of engineers, producers, composers, musicians, and creatives who share a passion for craft. Some run their own rooms here, others collaborate across projects, and the result is a place that\u2019s alive with energy and creativity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1752\">At the heart of our session is Will Chason\u2014a San Francisco-based engineer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose r\u00e9sum\u00e9 speaks for itself. He\u2019s a two-time Grammy winner (including Best Rap Song in 2021) with multi-platinum credits. He\u2019s worked closely with Kanye West, Tyler, The Creator, RZA, Steve Lacy, Pusha T, and The Head and the Heart, to name just a few. Will\u2019s also collaborated with production legends like Rick Rubin, Don Was, and Mike Dean.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1754\" data-end=\"2053\">Despite all that, he\u2019s easygoing, approachable, and fully focused on the music. It\u2019s that combination\u2014high-level skill and grounded energy\u2014that makes him such a valuable presence in a session. Watching him work in Studio A, you understand why this room and this engineer are such a powerful pairing.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2055\" data-end=\"2080\"><strong data-start=\"2059\" data-end=\"2080\">Setting the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2367\">As we step into the studio, Will is already deep in the setup process with the drummer, who\u2019s brought in their own kit. Will\u2019s first priority? Making sure the drums sound good in the room. He puts it plainly: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to get a good drum recording unless the drums sound good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2598\">He moves around the room, listening carefully, making adjustments, and collaborating with the drummer to fine-tune the kit\u2019s resonance and tone. He prefers to orient the kit lengthwise in the room, maximising options for room mics and allowing the sound to breathe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2835\" data-end=\"3056\">\u201cThese are all just starting points,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce I set up the starting points, we\u2019ll go into the control room and sort of get our tones.\u201d It\u2019s an iterative process that reflects Will\u2019s blend of precision and openness.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3058\" data-end=\"3081\"><strong data-start=\"3063\" data-end=\"3081\">Kick Drum Mics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3293\">Will sets up two mics on the kick. A Moon mic below the drumhead captures the sub-bass\u2014the low-end energy you feel more than hear. \u201cSometimes I\u2019ll leave it out of the mix, but it\u2019s always good just to grab it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3462\">At the sound hole, he places a D112 slightly angled at the beater.
