And for me, this one\u2019s personal.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Free were\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic font-[700]\">my<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">\u00a0band.<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0I adored Paul Kossoff\u2019s guitar playing \u2014 the space, the phrasing, that slow, aching vibrato. His feel taught me that less could be so much more. And then there\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Paul Rodgers<\/span><span class=\"\">. That voice. Still, to this day, one of the greatest rock vocalists ever to touch a mic. He didn\u2019t need to scream \u2014 he could\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">breathe<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0fire with control and soul. Bad Company took that heart and gave it muscle. They made blues emotional\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">and<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0commercial, which is no easy feat. They didn\u2019t sound like anyone else at the time \u2014 and they still don\u2019t.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h2><span class=\"\">So, Who\u2019s The One?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Cream might have started it all, and CSN gave voice to a generation. The Wilburys were pure magic in a room. Audioslave and Velvet Revolver made it all feel vital again in the 2000s. The Highwaymen redefined what legends could do together.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">But if you ask me?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Cream<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0were the ones. Because I lived it. I studied it. I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">sweated<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0over those songs, note for note, chasing the ghost of Clapton\u2019s phrasing in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Crossroads<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0like it was a rite of passage.
