I\u2019ve just been luckier than anyone on the planet.\u201d It wasn\u2019t false modesty. He wasn\u2019t fishing for compliments. This is a man who genuinely grapples with self-worth, who still questions whether he\u2019s any good at what he does.<\/p>\n<p>He told me a story about working on a Bryan Ferry record. Decades after the fact, he joked that he finally understood what it was supposed to sound like. \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll take that,\u201d he laughed, when I nudged him to accept his role in shaping the final sound. It\u2019s this blend of self-deprecating humour and relentless introspection that makes Meyerson such a fascinating figure. For someone who\u2019s mixed everything from\u00a0<em>Gladiator<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>Inception<\/em>, he remains beautifully, brutally human.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Zen of Mixing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alan explained that the best mixes come when he\u2019s not trying too hard, when things just happen. Early on, it felt like a chore, something you had to do after the fun part of recording was done. Plus, he noted, hiring a mixer meant losing precious budget for creative ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, though, he found his rhythm in mixing, especially when it came to classical and film scores. \u201cThere\u2019s freedom in not having to match what you did last time,\u201d he said. \u201cFilm music allows for reinvention.\u201d And that, it turns out, suits him perfectly.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Zimmer Connection and the Art of Collaboration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Of course, no conversation about Meyerson is complete without mentioning Hans Zimmer. Their working relationship is long-standing, creatively rich, and still going strong. Meyerson has been behind the board for many of Zimmer\u2019s defining scores including\u00a0<em>The Last Samurai<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Dark Knight<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Dunkirk<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Man of Steel<\/em>, and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Working with composers like Zimmer, James Newton Howard, John Powell, and Danny Elfman has taught him the subtlety of collaboration. His job isn\u2019t just to make things louder, wider, or more impressive. His mix room features a Euphonix System 5 digital console, ATC monitors, a stack of Pro Tools rigs, and a shrinking collection of analogue gear. \u201cIt decreases every year,\u201d he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the tech-forward setup, Alan is quick to remind me that great sound isn\u2019t about gear. It\u2019s about ears, taste, and intent. He\u2019s even a bit wary of today\u2019s template culture. \u201cI see a lot of young mixers using templates because they\u2019re trying to replicate what worked for someone else,\u201d he said. \u201cBut music\u2019s not a formula. You\u2019ve got to care about the why behind every choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mentorship and the Next Generation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alan lights up when we talk about teaching. \u201cI\u2019ve had the College of Engineering right here,\u201d he says, referring to the many assistants who\u2019ve gone on to build impressive careers of their own. He\u2019s deeply proud of their growth and quietly critical of an industry that often chases fast success over real learning.<\/p>\n<p>His advice? Focus less on what plug-ins you\u2019re using and more on what you\u2019re hearing. Fall in love with the process.
