Every phrase, every whisper, every breath, these get pushed or pulled so that the vocal stays emotionally present.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">This approach mirrors what the great engineers of the &#8217;50s and &#8217;60s did. They would sit at the desk with the lyrics in front of them, physically riding the fader in real time to match the performance. We replicate that today with volume automation, crafting a smooth and engaging journey for the listener.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h2><span class=\"\">Subtle Compression Chains<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Once the automation is set, I use\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">multiple stages of gentle compression<\/span><span class=\"\">, often layering tools like:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"font-[700]\">Waves Vocal Rider<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0to subtly reinforce the automation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font-[700]\">A light optical compressor (like an LA-2A)<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0for smooth levelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font-[700]\">A fast compressor (like an 1176)<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0to catch peaks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The idea is to do a little bit of work at each stage. I will use two or even three EQ plugins to gently shape the tone:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"\">Pull out low-mid build-up (e.g. 300 to 500 Hz) that might clash with piano or bass<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"\">Add a touch of presence around 7 to 10 kHz for clarity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"\">Apply a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">gentle high-pass filter<\/span><span class=\"\">, nothing aggressive, just enough to clean without thinning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">I avoid harsh filters unless absolutely necessary. Now, I use\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Soothe 2<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0to dynamically target those areas. It is intelligent, musical, and saves so much time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">That said, I still follow up with a traditional de-esser for fine-tuning. A vocal should sit in the track, not on top of it. It should be present without being overpowering. It should move the listener.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">That is why I still teach automation and performance-first mixing ten years on.
