Rather than deferring problem-solving to post-production, he makes intentional decisions during tracking that eliminate unnecessary corrective work later.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cEvery microphone and track that I record has to serve a purpose. I\u2019m almost mixing from the get-go.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><span class=\"\">Midrange Focus and Overhead Control<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">One of the first things Al listens for is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">midrange focus<\/span><span class=\"\">. By soloing the kick, snare, and hi-hats individually, he determines where the mix might lose definition. Often, the overheads carry more midrange than necessary, which can blur the transients and reduce punch.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cA broad midrange cut just under 1k on the overheads clears things up. With the drum tuning dialled in, he captures a kick that\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">tight, fast, and deep<\/span><span class=\"\">\u2014what he describes as having \u201cslap and smack.\u201d The snare is equally focused, delivering energy without excess ring.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cIf that kick drum was in the final record just as it is, I\u2019d be happy with it.
