Dan met Wallace\u2019s wife over drinks and casually asked what her husband did. \u201cOh, he works in music,\u201d she said. When the name Linkin Park came up, Steve quickly realised who Andy was and urged Dan to come meet him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"970\" data-end=\"1292\">Despite initial hesitation about bothering someone on holiday, Dan eventually met Andy late one evening. They didn\u2019t talk shop, instead, they simply connected. Andy knew Dan had a local studio, and soon after, during the pandemic, he reached out needing a space outside of Miami\u2019s bustling Criteria to mix Gojira\u2019s record.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1438\">Dan was thrown into the deep end, but it worked. Tobias Forge, Ghost\u2019s mastermind, has worked with Andy on several records, but Dan\u2019s role has grown integral.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1779\" data-end=\"2013\">Typically, producers send Pro Tools sessions to Dan, who ensures all plug-ins are intact and the session mirrors the production team\u2019s intentions. He gets the mix up on the SSL console, often beating the demo before Andy even arrives.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2199\">Andy then steps in with his trademark finesse, \u201cbalancing mastery,\u201d as Dan calls it, using nothing more than SSL EQ and compression. No 1176s, no limiters, just gentle, precise tweaks.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2226\">The Master Bus Debate<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2228\" data-end=\"2546\">Asked how Andy approaches the master bus, Dan offers a knowing grin, \u201cHe brutalises it.\u201d While Dan prefers inserting a <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/N9YQXK\">DW Fearn tube comp<\/a> for weight or occasionally a <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/4GBrgZ\">BetterMaker<\/a> EQ, Andy keeps it spartan, just the <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/DK1GPG\">SSL 4K compressor<\/a>, slammed with authority. \u201cIf the threshold knob could go further right, we\u2019d use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2548\" data-end=\"2811\">This hands-on, ear-driven style reflects Andy\u2019s overall approach. He doesn\u2019t reach for surgical EQ moves or fuss over frequencies. \u201cSometimes he\u2019ll just say, \u2018take the green knob down a bit,\u2019\u201d Dan laughs. \u201cHe\u2019s all ears. That\u2019s what makes his work feel so alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2813\" data-end=\"2836\">The Power of Muting<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2838\" data-end=\"3151\">Another Wallace hallmark? Ruthless muting. \u201cHe\u2019ll look at a session with five guitars and go, \u2018What\u2019s that one doing? There were no studios available with an SSL 4000, only a Duality. \u201cNo console recall, no Andy. I was stressing,\u201d he admits. But in the end, the Duality\u2019s sharp EQs and clarity served the mixes well. The record sounds more open, perhaps a little cleaner, but no less powerful.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3543\" data-end=\"3704\">The first song mixed in Stockholm, \u201cSatanized,\u201d sealed the deal. Tobias was so thrilled, they ended up remixing the entire album on the Duality over three weeks.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3706\" data-end=\"3753\">The Chorus Bass Trick and Other Mix Secrets<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3755\" data-end=\"4009\">One of Andy\u2019s signature moves is a stereo chorus on bass using an SPX90. A mono bass track runs down the middle, while a chorused version blends in subtly, more in choruses, less in verses, creating that \u201cbigger than life\u201d sound without muddying the mix.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4011\" data-end=\"4269\">Dan shares that while they mostly stick to traditional tools, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/POqrBY\">SSL<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/GKY0Ek\">UAD LA-2As<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/DKK3Ay\">1176s<\/a>, they also use modern plugins like<a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/19KD2d\"> Soothe<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/Z6exq1\">FabFilter<\/a> for mix clarity. The final mixes are limited with <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/o4aXV9\">FabFilter Pro L2<\/a> for band approval before being mastered by Ted Jensen.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4271\" data-end=\"4314\">Tracking Philosophy and Bass Techniques<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4316\" data-end=\"4629\">When recording bass, Dan always uses a <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/Qj6mMY\">BAE 1073 DI<\/a> for low-end girth and combines it with gritty SVT amp tones. He might even add a <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/09Bx2V\">RAT pedal<\/a> for midrange growl, miking with a <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/R5P9Av\">FET47<\/a> and a Soyuz condenser for room detail, blended and phase-aligned. Today, he\u2019s built a dedicated Atmos room and handles about half a day\u2019s worth of Atmos mixing each week.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5105\" data-end=\"5137\">Teaching the Next Generation<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5139\" data-end=\"5446\">Dan also runs Soundmine Recording Academy out of his Poconos studio, offering intimate classes in both stereo and Atmos mixing.
