I recently had the pleasure of watching four world-class mixers\u2014Marc Daniel Nelson, Bob Horn, Darrell Thorp and Ariel Chobaz\u2014work their magic on different tracks. What emerged was a masterclass in philosophy, taste and technical execution. With a vocal that\u2019s already emotive and dynamic, he avoids heavy-handed processing, preferring instead to \u201chug\u201d the vocal just enough to keep it nestled inside the mix.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1592\">He starts with the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1048\">MJU<\/strong>\u00a0compressor, letting it tap lightly to add warmth and tonal weight without visible gain reduction. Then, he layers compression using\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1181\" data-end=\"1194\">Tube-Tech<\/strong>\u00a0for the midrange, a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1229\">Distressor<\/strong>\u00a0for punch and multiband control to tame upper mids as needed. Rather than treating vocals in isolation, Marc builds the mix around their natural energy. Reverb automation using\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1425\">Seventh Heaven<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1443\">FabFilter<\/strong>\u00a0long throws becomes part of the arrangement, with swelling tails enhancing transitions. His vocal mix runs through two paths\u2014a main vocal chain and a parallel \u201ctexture\u201d bus.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1829\" data-end=\"2170\">He uses a host of plug-ins like the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1865\" data-end=\"1889\">Lindell 902 De-Esser<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1891\" data-end=\"1911\">Acustica Pink EQ<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1916\" data-end=\"1926\">Soothe<\/strong>\u00a0to control sibilance and carve space. What\u2019s fascinating is his commitment to getting every frequency pocket right. He\u2019ll notch out problem zones in the low mids, then add a focused low shelf around 50 Hz for depth that doesn\u2019t fight the bass.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2172\" data-end=\"2593\">The parallel vocal is where the sauce lives. He uses\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2225\" data-end=\"2242\">Waves Doubler<\/strong>\u00a0for width (with the center muted), a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2294\">Distressor<\/strong>, a transformer emulator for harmonic fuzz and a final limiter\u2014all blended in subtly to give the vocal presence without adding volume.
