It felt like stepping inside the brain of an inventor \u2014 equal parts engineer, artist and craftsman. Everywhere I looked there were details that spoke of care and precision: hand-welded fixtures, art deco styling, beautifully treated rooms and gear racks built with an obsessive level of thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">At the centre of it all stood\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Dax Liniere<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0\u2014 producer, mixer, mastering engineer, builder and in many ways a creative scientist. In 2016 after a successful career in Australia he packed his entire life into a shipping container and sent it halfway across the world to London to build a new world-class recording complex from scratch. It took him around\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">a year and a half<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0of six and seven-day weeks to complete. Every wall, cable and panel was planned, designed and fitted by him.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He explained to me that he wanted \u201c<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">natural light in every room<\/span><span class=\"\">\u201d and a creative space that felt\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">alive<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0not another dark windowless box pretending to have vibe. The result is stunning. Every room has character, warmth and an unmistakable sense of purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The acoustic design by\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Jeff Hedback<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0is executed with the same precision. Floating floors, deeply treated ceilings, reversible gobos that switch from absorption to diffusion and velvet drapes to control decay. It\u2019s a piece of British engineering history that Dax has paired with a formidable selection of boutique preamps\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Chandler TG2 Abbey Road Edition<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Atlas Juggernaut Twin<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Pendulum Audio MDP-1<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Great River MP-2NV<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Daking Mic-Pre IV<\/span><span class=\"\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He doesn\u2019t use outboard compression or EQ on the way in which surprised me at first. But as Dax explained<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cMy ethos is to capture everything as cleanly as possible. The sound is in the instrument, the mic choice, the placement and the player.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">And it\u2019s true. Every signal path in this studio is immaculate. He built a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">battery-powered pedal power supply<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0to eliminate hum, a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">sequential power switcher<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0to safely bring up his racks in the correct order and a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">retro refrigerator mic locker<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0to store microphones vertically (ideal for ribbons). Every inch of this place has been thought through.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"font-[700]\">Live Room B<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Control Room 1<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0are equally impressive. Control Room 1 Dax\u2019s main mixing and mastering suite is built around a pair of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Duntech Princess<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0monitors powered by\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Hypex Class-D monoblocks<\/span><span class=\"\">. When he played back a mix the clarity and imaging were jaw-dropping. The room itself designed again by Hedback is tuned to within millimetres and treated with hand-painted red quadratic diffusers.
